FW,
I was under the impression from your writing that you were a resident of the Mississippi gulf coast. Given Katrina's unwelcome visit, I think I speak for all of Jabootu's minions in hoping that you are not only safe, sound, hale and hearty but that you haven't suffered any serious losses to hearth and home.
Check back in when you have the chance and let us know how you're doing. |

Here, here. I live in Mississippi, as well - but fortunately North (15 minutes away from Memphis, TN). So, even though I was directly in it's path, the storm had degraded enough only to knock out power and uproot a few trees. I sincerely hope Scott and all his loved ones have not suffered because of the devastation. Here is some info as to his likely personal safety, though: http://www.livejournal.com/users/foywonder/

Keep safe, Scott.
Man, New Orleans might functionally be gone. Michael Totten noted that cities ceasing to exist sounds like something that should have stopped happening in the Middle Ages, and he's right.

When the hurricanes hit Florida, we sent refugees west. We are now repaying the debt by takeing in many people.
A tsunami survivor said that he hasn't forgotten how the United States had helped him durring the disaster and wished that he could help us now. But he said all he can afford to send are his prayers. God bless him.

Check with your company before you donate. A lot of corporations have special employee matching plans, and they'll supplement your donation.
We've always been united in stupidity. That's why there is no hope. But, then again, when has that ever stopped us?

Does nobody read my blog???? :(
http://www.livejournal.com/users/foywonder/
What I posted on Stomp Tokyo's message board was basically a variation of what I posted on the blog and I will continue to add a few things over the coming days and weeks, until some sense of normalcy or something resembling normalcy returns.. My internet capabilities have been very limited over here in Daleville, Alabama where myself and my family are currently taking refuge. I'm alive. I've seen a high altitude photo of my neighborhood and my house appears to be fine, not even any major roof damage. Won't know for sure until I actually get home, which won't be happening until they at least get some running water down there. It's one thing to be without electricity but it's another thing to be without basic sanitation.
One thing I'm getting annoyed with is seeing some of the coverage of the coast. Heard the following statement on The Weather Channel the other day since they've set up shop in my hometown of Long Beach:
...reporting from Long Beach, MS... A town of 20,000 COMPLETELY DESTROYED!
While we know for a fact that a good portion of our town just a few blocks from the beach got decimated, Long Beach is far from being completely destroyed. If you want to talk about total devastation, let's talk about Pass Christian (one town over from us), Waveland, and the east side of Biloxi, including the small towns of D'Iberville and St. Martin. Waveland and Pass Christian are both small towns and from what we've heard, it sounds like the only structures still standing are the water towers with the town names on them - almost acting as grave markers for where the towns used to be. East Biloxi and those two small towns I mentioned are where the major casualities are going to turn out to be from. That area got it worst because they got the tidal surge from the Gulf and the overflow from the Back Bay they reside on. We're hearing rumors that the body count from those areas is going to be in the hundreds.
Anyway, I've gotta run. Watch the blog for further updates. Barring some unexpected damage that destroyed my home's interior, I'm one of the lucky ones.

Nice to hear from you! I'm also very glad to hear about the apparant lack of major damage to your home. I do read your journal (notice that I originally linked to it at the start of this discussion). Keep well, guy!

Cool Foy I'm glad to see you're safe and sound as well as your home.
