quote: MOVIE SEEKS BLOG REVIEWERS: The PR folks for the forthcoming Joss Whedon (Buffy, Angel, etc.) science fiction movie Serenity are inviting bloggers to advance screenings. (List of cities here via an Excel document that didn't quite format right, but it's legible). It's free, and all they ask is that you blog something, good or bad, about it.
If you're interested, email 'em at rsvp@gracehillmedia.com and they'll put you on the list. I'll be going to a screening in Knoxville.

| Guess Joss Whedon must be supremely confident about his new film. If the Harry Knowles's of the world clean his clock, "Serenity" will be DOA long before the Eberts of the world had their say. |

He's already given advance screenings of the movie, several months back, in fact. Word has been good so far, so this might not be as big a risk as one might think. In fact, you might see it happening more in future if the movie's a big enough hit.

BTW, having never seen an episode of Firefly, I only now realized that this movie is a spin-off.
Serenity is an interesting, even wry title for a sci-fi action comedy, but I wonder who made the decision to drop any reference to the series from not only the movie title but also from most of the TV ads I've seen. |

Well, the whole reason the movie was made was because the DVDs sold extremely well, so I doubt they're trying to distance themselves from the TV show. I suspect it's more along the lines that pretty much everyone who bought the DVDs will know that it's related, but they don't want anyone to think you have to have seen the TV show in order to understand the movie.
I'm looking forward to this movie more than any other movie this year. The word from the advance screenings have been pretty good, but I haven't looked too deep into them because I'm trying to avoid knowning anything else about the movie. I don't even watch any of the trailers. I'd love to go to the midnight screening of the ENTIRE FIRST SEASON at the Coolidge Corner theater in Brookline, MA, but I really don't think I'd be able to stay awake for the whole thing.
Go see this movie. |

| Currently it's rated 8.5 (out of 10) on the IMDB. |

So after actually seeing this movie I have to say:
Go see this movie! Please! Don't force Joss Whedon back into writing scripts for people who don't appreciate his work! |

This movie is simply beautiful. Hilarious, but also a great action movie. Don't know what else to say without raving like a maniac about how cool it is.
*Spoilers*
I think my favorite moment was when the Operative finishes one speech with "I'm unarmed...", and Malcolm instantly draws his gun and shoots him a couple times |

Saw it today. Loved it. I'm tempted to buy a Jane action figure to help send Joss more money.

It is a terrific movie, even if you've never seen the show.
I wouldn't worry too much about Joss going back to the salt mines. He's got Wonder Woman coming up, don't forget, and I think this new movie "Goners" that he's got in the pipeline is also going to happen. Plus he's still writing comics. He's a brand name now.

I agree: I'd only seen a couple of eps of the TV show before seeing the movie (and picked up the SERENITY RPG the night before the premiere, breaking my oft-made promise to NEVER buy ANY MORE NEW RPG's and was pleasantly suprised), and had no problem following the plot. Knowig the show helped, but there was just enough exposition woven into the action that someone completely new to the 'Verse could follow without problem.
I'm actually pleasantly suprised I liked it as much as I did. I tried to watch BUFFY & co, but was quite put off by the hipper-than-thou post-mod attitudes of the scripting. I had thought that Whedon was one of those writers who was a bit too wrapped up in their own cleverness for its own sake (sort of like Douglas Adams in the DIRK GENTLY stories, though they were still enjoyable), but in SERENITY he seems to have been able to keep that tendancy under control.
And, I have to respect him utterly for keeping the cast of the TV show on for the movie. It shows a true commitment to his vision for the show that he didn't cave in to presumed pressure from the studio to cast 'bankable' names.
I think the reason they're not playing up the connection to the TV show is that Universal doesn't want to be seen as pandering to the 'fan boy' demo. After all, they're assured that the movie will do X business based on the sales of the FIREFLY DVD's, and the fact that the series was made by a different studio (Fox, perhaps?) may also play into it.
But, now that I've seen the movie, I will have to go out and get the DVD's.....
