Wait -- you mean he's been ignoring me personally and specifically?

Great. Now I'll be in a funk all day.

I did send him a funny matchbook once, via regular mail, so maybe he just remembers me.

Sure! And if you handcuff yourself to a bedpost, you have the "flexibility" to "choose" to stay within a few feet of bed. Makes sense.

I'm not 100% sure on what your point is.

The US is very good at making television shows, then selling cheaply them to the rest of the world. Other sovereign governments might like to stop some shows being shown in some countries, and the UN is throwing a bone to those countries who might otherwise lack the leverage to say no.

Now, this is unfair to the US in terms of trade, but given such protectionist measures are ignored wherever politically convenient by the US federal govt (agricultural subsidies, anyone?) then it is a little hypocritical to call foul.

What makes you believe that a UN treaty can possibly give anyone "bargaining leverage?" How can this make a deal more palatable to the other side? Do you wave it around until people who didn't sign it suddenly decide to go with a deal they wouldn't before? Does it even do anything a sovereign power couldn't do before?

C'mon. It's a joke. It's a strategy that will not and cannot work, because the US did not achieve market dominance with treaties. It achieved market dominance because a) around World War II, a huge number of extremely talented people found it expedient to go to the US, and b) Hollywood has been forced, for close to a century, to make films people are willing to pay to see.

How does it do that?

That's fair comment, and I believe that agricultural subsidies or any other sort of direct subsidy is a bad idea. While "Drop the import duty on rice, or we will raise duty on your cars" is a necessary bit of bargaining, I do think it's a necessary evil. It would be much better to drop trade barriers across the board, and I don't defend them.

Yikes, I was not aware a familiarity with international agricultural subsidies was something most fans of bad movies possesed. Maybe that's why I don't get Pyun and Bolls movies, I'm missing all the subtle jokes about agricultural subsidies hidden in the script!

Well the big reason Hollywood is so dominant is because WWI wrecked the European film industry. Oh and foreigners love Hollywood movies.
