I went to see NORTH COUNTRY with my wife & sister in law Friday Night, and I can certainly recommend it as a well-made film, it does evidence one thing that was quite Jabootu-esque.
Forgetting the trend of 'un-prettying' drop dead gorgeous actresses to highlight their acting talent (and damn it, Charlize Theron does a damn good job in a couple of scenes), the biggest glaring bit of Jabootuiana is Frances McDormand, who seems to have been cast mostly to reprise her accent from FARGO, and whose character undergoes the fastest bout of Lou Gehrig's disease I've ever seen. Granted, I'm not familiar with the real-life story this film is based on (not that it would help), and the movie itself is a little unclear on timelines, but it sure as hell looked like this character went from having some arthritic tightness in her joints to being fully paralyzed in a couple of weeks.
Its almost like some producer said "Wait, this story of a single-mom overcoming entrenched sexist attitudes just doesn't have enough PUNCH! This script needs more debilitating neurological diseases! That'll just SCREAM Oscar!"
Sean Bean, OTOH, has dethroned Emma Thompson for the most seamless accent-ectomy in movie history: He had a flawless Minnesota accent. No trace of his usual cultured british tones.
MikeC, just wanted to get that off my chest. |

Does Sean Bean die in this?
Edit: Or at least suffer a nasty comeuppance?

Brace yourself:
HE'S A GOOD GUY!
He's married to Frances McDormand's character, and is pretty much the picture of the devoted husband.
Between that, and the weight he seems to have lost (his face looked much more angular than, say, in his SHARPS RIFLES days), I didn't recognize him.

| This was at the chud.com review: "the McDormand character is real, and in real life even more dramatic (she showed up to a court hearing in her hospital bed)". It seems that fact is cheesier than fiction in this case. |

OK.
I still quibble on the exact timeline of her illness, but at least they got that right.
I still give the movie a good recommendation.
