If you guys wants something with a mix of politics and cinema, then this link should fit the bill. But I warn you it might cause your head to explode. But seriously, I think think this article provides thoughtful insight to the capitalist method of cinema versus the socialist method of cinema.

Well, it's not our fault that French cinema doesn't produce many good movies...and it's funny that they keep complaining about the evils of the free market, as if the movie industry were really a good example of one.
But of course what it boils down to is that a not-insignificant portion of the French population is paranoid-xenophobic, including a not-insignificant portion of the government. This is, after all, the country with a language-purity board.

The thing is, that Hollywood's movies are just BETTER, not "good".

Yeah, the riots; what are they doing about it?

French Cinema : doing to movies, what Sominex does to old people.

Socialist,Capitilist, Movies are like the Paris sewer system...what you get out of it, depends on what you put into it!

The latest French whine : Chatue de Pompus, with the light fruity flavor of sour grapes.

I'm no fan of pretentious French cinema or subsidies to the film industry but why do we always have to resort to Francophobia? So immature.

Hey, Francophobia is an ancient and respected Anglo-saxon tradition.

Huh, in that case, you'd think that it would have died back in 1066.

I'm on Triviachamp's page with this one; mocking the French is pretty old hat. Sure, their movies suck, but the same also applies to every film that's come out of Germany since, what, the 1930s?

Francophobia?

I'm sorry but those people do not scare me.

They amuse me. That's why I put the link up in the first place.

I like to think Das Boot and Das Experiment had their moments.

For proof that "kick-ass French action film" is not a complete oxymoron, I recommend "The Nest":

IIRC, Das Boot was a TV miniseries cut into a film. Usually a recipe for disaster, but not there.

Must agree with Capt. Nemo....they just make it so easy...where as the Germans are good at stageing invasions. Just ask the Poles.

I have had a hard time taking French artistic endeavors seriously ever since they put walking snowglobes in the Olympic opening ceremonies. But I agree, pounding on them just isn't very sporting.

Well, most films do suck, one way or the other.

"A Heart in Winter" was pretty damn good; "Crimson Rivers" came awfully close to being Really good -- shame it sort of fell apart at the climax, and the cameraman or director needs to be slapped for one scene in a library.

Guys, wide angle lenses distort straight lines. Don't use one and pull back from shelves. Duh.
