I'm one of the late Warren Zevon's first tier fans, but I'm the first to admit that the lyrics to his biggest hit:

are just doggerel.
Of course, "Werewolves of London" was supposed to be a goof from the start, which makes it more clever than most pop songs around. I've lost count of the times I've read a lyric sheet and said "That's what they're saying?!" |

Quite a few of Warren's songs were weird for the sake of being weird, so it's hard to imagine somebody trying to find some serious meaning for his stuff.
One work that is often misinterpreted for reasons that baffle me is Born in the USA; didn't anybody in the '80s actually listen to the lyrics? It's not like the Bruce had some hidden message in the way he wrote it.
BM: I should have mentioned this at the beginning. I solve my problems with violence. |

I always just kind of sang along to Daniel and Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me by Elton John. Loved those songs, but only really gave Daniel much thought as to meaning. Couldn't figure it out, never bothered to look.
Then I saw his "Red Piano" concert in Vegas. He had mini-movies running in the background which gave stories to the songs. I looked up Daniel later and confirmed, it's about Viet Nam. And while I didn't look up Sun, from the video, it seems to be about an abusive, co-dependent relationship. Which when you listen to the words, makes total sense.
Who knew.
I came, I saw, I was really too tired to deal with it so I just went to bed. |

What *is* it really about?
Simian punishment.
Wow, a euphamism of a euphamism. It's hard to imagine getting more indirect without saying the exact opposite.
It's obvious if you spend a few seconds wondering what he would do that while staring at her picture:
quote:
I got your picture of me and you You wrote "I love you" I wrote "me too" I sit here staring and there's nothing else to do Oh it's in color Your hair is brown Your eyes are hazel And soft as clouds I have to kiss you when there's no one else around
I'm turning Japanese I think I'm turning Japanese I really think so

Dave Fenton, lead singer of The Vapors, claims it wasn't written about that.
