I was sweating bullets until they called me (while working through the voice mail messages from this morning). Thank goodness they got to me before the tickets went.
PEGGY: I don't see how having a girl on the team would ruin it. Did a woman judge ruin the Supreme Court? HANK: Yes, and that woman's name was Earl Warren.

B-Fest was actually "officially" sold out at 11:30 am CST. It took them a while to make all the call-backs to people who left voice mail when the box office opened, but when they were done with those they still had a sizable waiting list.

Oops, indeed. Probably the fairest thing A&O can do for B-Fests to come is to make it a student-and-staff-of-NU-ONLY event.
As for me, I do have backup plans, but I don't think I'll even try to attend in the future.

B-Fest selling out in less than an hour was crazy.
Fortunately, I did manage to get one ticket after being put on the waiting list.
I'll see you all there. |

Why not find a larger venue and sell more tickets? If demand is that high, limiting access is foolish.

I agree with you there, however, does NU have a more suitable spot? I've never been a student there, but I did go to New Trier High School, and various events that I have been part of were hosted at NU facilities. Two come to mind: Welsh-Ryan Arena (I had my graduation there) and Pick-Staiger (which is a concert hall I performed at with the Symphonic Wind Ensemble a few times). Neither is good. Welsh-Ryan is a barn where half the audience would be looking sideways at the screen, and it doesn't have a stage. Pick-Staiger has a stage, but it's a concert hall. Could it be set up for movies? And what about the mess? (B-Festers are tidy, I know, we pick up after ourselves, but I don't think NU would appreciate having a buncha freaks like us in a premier concert hall.)
This doesn't preclude any Theatre Department venues (I have never been part of or even seen a play there), or maybe renting some other space. I can't say anything about that.
I admit that I have been too rash in saying that the fairest thing to do is to limit access to nonstudents, but this is an event run by Northwestern students *for* Northwestern students. I for one wouldn't find it fair if I was a student who had a class then, to find that the tickets sold out before I had a chance to go over to Norris to buy one. I propose this, then: How about a staggered release? Students'n'staff get one week to buy their tickets (at a student price, with ID checking and all), before opening the phones and selling general audience tickets.
There are other ways to deal with this, too, like having two B-Fests per year (Twice the fun! Thrice the hassle!) or maybe having a few smaller screening rooms, divided by genre (Hmm, if I wanna see "Monkey Hustle" at 7:00 in the Blaxploitation Room, that will interfere with "Gamera Vs. Legion" in the Kaiju Dome at 7:30). Or maybe some other way that I'm not imaginative enough to think of (I could buy an abandoned theater, fix it up, and run my own festival (Step 1: Buy theater. Step 2: ??? Step 3: PROFIT!))
Now I've run out of incoherent whiny ramblings. In the end, I'm glad that A&O has the problem of runaway success, as they have run many memorable B-Fests, and I wish them success for many years to come.

The B-Fest.com web site has been updated to address this question, on the FAQs page.
