Interesting read. I agree with him about the current stars being chosen for looks over ability.

Sir Christopher has a point, but don't think that the
phenomena of 'Looks over talet' is wholly new: back in
the days of the studio system they cast people for looks
all the time.

The difference is that being a studio star also got you
acting lessons and other coaching that built up their
talent (and in some cases it just didn't work). Not
to mention that a lot of actors had additional outlets
of radio and theatre to build up experience that just
don't exist anymore.

It's a good point to make - Lee has probably seen lots of people hired for their looks, but in b-grade roles where if they sank, they didn't cause too much damage. However, someone like Jessica Alba (who is very pretty but acts as well as I do) gets paid millions for doing not very much. Her career is really going to suffer if her looks start to fade.

Also in the studio days they also tried to build up a fan base and a run of hits before labeling someone a "star" unlike today when everyone and his dog is a "star" who commands $20 Million after one hit movie.

I must say this Icke fellow looks interesting though. "...believes the world is run by 12 ft. lizards...Bush and Blair are controlled by a sinister network that controls our lives..."

Yeah. I'll buy that.

I'm sure the Golden Age of Hollywood had just as many manufactured stars as today. We probably don't remember them because they faded from the Hollywood scene... just as today's celebrity puff jobs will vanish in a few years.

But he died rather young before he could really prove himself. Not fair really unless every young actor who is tragically killed at a young age has to be a James Dean.

When I first looked at the title of this thread, my eyes thought--just for second--that it said "Christopher Lambert laments Hollywood 'stars'" and a mouthful of Diet Coke almost hit the keyboard.

Not to derail this thread, Triviachamp, but Robert Francis was one of the worst actors I've ever seen. And I've seen Chuck Norris. Forgive me, but invoking Francis in the same breath as James Dean is way off base. That would be like comparing Norris to Paul Newman.

Francis was a perfect example of Golden Age Hollywood trying to make somebody a star based on his looks, not his talent.

Omigosh, Zombiewhacker! You've taken the name Chuck Norris in vain!

Don't you know that Chuck Norris' tears cure cancer? It's too bad he's never cried. EVER.

Well, as far as Christopher Lambert:

He has much respect from me for being able to wipe
out his accent for the HIGHLANDER films (in fact, he
took vocal coaching to create an indefinable accent
that melded many different ones into the unique
cadence he had as Connor McCloud).

That, and he was married to Diane Lane.

And Lambert was also classy enough to appear in the first TV episode of Highlander despite the fact he was probably paid very little money and was mostly there to hold Adrian Paul's hat. If Lambert had any reservations about being on the set in those few days of shooting, he never let it show in any of the takes.
