Sounds like Jabootu material. Foy sure hated it: http://www.horrorchannel.com/dread/index.php?name=Reviews&req=showcontent&id=812. And last time I checked it was at 0% positive at Rotten Tomatoes (plus, of course, there was no critic's screening.) I certainly didn't like "Equilibrium" much, but I'm disappointed it turned out...THAT badly. Apperantly. Still, it sounds pretty funny-bad. Judging from the ads, the visuals at least save it from Uwe Boll territory.

I assure you that it's Uwe Boll territory and then some. I'd dare say that BLOODRAYNE was a more well made film than ULTRAVIOLET.

| From the ads, I'd say they've set a new record by remaking Aeon Flux less than a year after it was first released. |

From the trailers, visually speaking, I find that hard to believe. At least Ultraviolet looks purty.

| I honestly didn't find it that bad. The plot was, admittedly, one of the most non-sensical things I've ever seen, but the action scenes were pretty good. Some nice visual style involving the shifting colors (sorta like Hero, if you saw that, though not as good), a couple cool gadgets (both useful, like the gravity leveller, and nifty, like the disposeable phone). Not perfect, or even close, but I was actually entertained, rather than having entertainment sucked out of me. *shrugs* |

According to IMDb, apparently this movie was at least partly created so that Wimmer could finally do his 'Gun Kata' the way he liked - when he did Equilibrium (a great film, in my opinion) he wanted the Gun Kata to look a certain way but the stunt coordinator had it altered (I forget if IMDb mentioned the reason).
It was also hinted that the movie was based on a comic book, but the only thing I could find in a search was a webcomic from the movie site.
For what its worth, my brother and I both really, really like Jovovich, and we've liked 2 of the movies she's been in (5th Element and Resident Evil 1). He went to see it saturday, and I got this ticked off phone call 2 hrs later from him, asking me 'what the hell did I just see'. He couldn't make sense of the plot at all.

That seems like a really weird reason to make a whole movie. |

Few things can make me NOT look forward to seeing Milla Jovovich. This film is one of them.

I've had a quick look to try to find this comic (or info about a comic) that was used as the basis for "Ultraviolet". I've read conflicting info - that it was from the 1960s / 1970s but the exerpts I've seen certainly aren't from that time period, that it is a foreign language comic, that it is a UK comic - to the point that I don't believe it was a comic. I mean, they've released a novelisation of the movie, but no graphic novel or comic collection?
Unless there is some horrible copyright issue involved here, all I can think is that it's been called a comic book movie to gain nerd cred by associating it with other recent comic book films (eg "Batman Begins", "Spiderman 2"). Never-the-less, I'll look to do a review of it in future.
Of course, my major disappointment was that it wasn't a big screen adaption of the excellent "Ultraviolet" TV series staring Jack Davenport. That had vampires too, with the bonus of an intelligent script.

It's not based on a comic book. The whole thing was made up by Kurt Wimmer, and that includes all the fake manga comics shown in the film's opening credits.

Wimmer may have made up ULTRAVIOLET, but certainly the genre of "Hot Woman Warrior", of which Aeon Flux and Barbarella are two of the most famous examples, is a well-established one in Europe.
