| Right now most commentary tracks have the right adequately-critical/blatant-selling-out-of-the -film ratio. If they push it just a little more, it would be like those awful "making of" documentaries. They used to be good at the beginning, but now are just bad promos with some behind the scenes footage squeezed in. |

| A lot of the few negative commentary tracks I've come across seem to be for movies I actually like. 'Top Secret' for example had the ZAZ team talking for half the movie about how and why it didn't really work. I can't help but wish the makers of movies I really disliked were generally so critical. |

The thing that annoys me about most commentary tracks, even the good ones, is that it seems they completely mix out the real dialog, which can make things hard to follow even for movies I know well (like GHOSTBUSTERS, which has a great MST3K tribute commentary track).
Or is it just that I have a crappy sound system?

| I would say 95% of all commentaries I've ever heard have the film somewhat audible in the background. So maybe it's you! *g* There's generally subtitles as well... |

Of course, if you're listening to the commentary track, actually hearing the movie is kind of pointless.
Probably the worst commentary track I've hear in recent memory was on Thumb Wars where the director and the others on the track explained every single joke. |

Not entirely, I get what he's saying. You don't want it to be loud enough to distract from the commentary, but if you can't hear it at all it's psychologically annoying to me. Having it somewhat audible ties the commentary into the movie, and it fills the gaps too. |

| Well, as kind of a background noise, yeah. I get that. But to complain that you can't here lines and stuff is weird. I mean, of course not. Someone is talking all the way through the movie with the commentary track on. |

I don't feel that the dialog on a movie is superfluous. Its as much a part of the movie as the choice of lenses or the effects or the costumes. I'm sure that if DVD makers wanted to, they could do a better overlay mix of the commentary track so you don't lose the dialog, but let's face it: DVD's are so profitable for the studios that they probably don't spend that much time on making the commentary track play nice (audio is a lot more difficult to deal with than, say, flashy computer generated menu screens).
Besides: a fair amount of the commentary tracks I've heard often digress into script matters that often make no sense without being able to hear what the commentators are talking about.
To each their own, I guess.

If the MST3K people were smart they would supply branded commentaries to critically savaged films with meager DVD sales prospects. For example:
Gigli by itself = little to no consumer interest
Gigli with MST3K commentary track = cult phenomenon |
