So, how long do you spend doing a review? How many times do you watch the movie? How do you harden your hearts and minds for the task ahead?

I watch a movie from start to finish, then pick up a pen and pad and start the film again, pausing to write down what happens and any thoughts. Then I transcribe the notes onto the computer, format it, add any extras and put it up.
How long does that take? Too damn long :-)

I start the movie up, and freeze it when I have a comment. As anyone who's read my stuff (and my apologies to them) knows, that can be quite often. Sometimes I'll watch ten or twenty seconds of something and stop and blater on for an entire page or two.
This process is also lengthened by the fact that I'm pretty anal about quoting dialogue right, which itself is exacerbated by the fact that I have a very bad ear and no short term memory, so I usually have to listen to a line a good five times or before I make sure I'm sure I've transcribed it correctly. Obviously quoting an entire exchange or monologue takes proportionately longer.
Depending on the film, of course, a review can thus take a pretty diligent week or more of work to write. (And imagine how long it would take if I actually proofread them!) The piece I'm currently working on is running about 50 pages, which isn't a record, but is abnormally long. I'd say a good twenty hours, at least, has been eaten up on that one, and it's not posted yet.
Usually I spend the majority of the time on the beginning part of the film, as that's when all the characters, background and plot stuff is generally established. Usually by the end of the movie the action is rolling a bit more and thus I have (comparatively) less to say.
I'd say it takes another couple of hours to pull still captures, adjust them, and physically post the review.
PEGGY: I don't see how having a girl on the team would ruin it. Did a woman judge ruin the Supreme Court? HANK: Yes, and that woman's name was Earl Warren.

| Well, let me give you a hint. I'd been reviewing Dragon Strike video, mostly writing down a play-by-play at this point, and a 33 minute video took over four hours to watch, and I still haven't written anything solid on it, yet, like the padding of commentary. All I have in my notebook is what happens on screen. Four hours of watch-pause-write, watch-pause-write. |
