| At this rate, the remakes will be coming out before the original. |

Does anyone else think that the 80's were really the Decade of the Nerd? You have a host of "science" movies where the nerds reign supreme. You also have a golden age of regular sci-fi films.

I agree with Terrahawk: the Eighties were the beginning of the Age of the Nerd Ascendant, at least in media.
In life, of course, for all the crowing about how the nerds now rule the world, we know things are as they always were: there are cool kids who put down the nerds.
Its just that, nowadays, the nerd is more likely to be able to hit back, either via weird martial arts (learned from things like anime) or by ruining the cool kids' credit rating.

"Ascendant" is an apt description. In an age where video games were cool to the general population, nerds started figuring out how to steal them through the phone lines[1].
And thus were the seeds of BitTorrent sown...

That would actually be, initiate the countdown to a nuclear holocaust and then manage to avert it. I loved that film.

Not to mention that up to around '85 an aspiring nerd could get a foot in the door in the software industry by writing a game for his Commodore in 6502 assembler and publishers would snap it up. ...I was born about ten years too late. *sigh*

You're not kidding. A friend of mine who's about 6 years older than me went to a trade school and spent maybe $2,000 on an Associate degree in Fortran and COBAL went straight into a county government programming job and now he makes about $75K a year or something keeping up databases on a PC.
Coming soon- Eraserhead: The Musical!! |

No, because the point is twenty-five years ago he really was a highly qualified specialist just because he could program on a main-frame. Now, the fact that he still has a job making tons of money even though the main-frames are gone- that's bureaucracy. Actually it may be that they still have some stuff lying around that's so archaic only he can deal with it... _ Coming soon- Eraserhead: The Musical!! |

Personally, I found that saying "Give me twenty dollars on Pump #3" was enough revenge.
