A German ecothriller that is:
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/05/16/ap/entertainment/mainD8HKUNGO6.shtml

Some blurbs I found about this:

quote:
More gripping than Crichton, classier than Cussler, Frank Schatzing's record-breaking ecological thriller is here. After dominating the German bestseller lists for over 12 months "The Swarm" is about to make waves across the world. Frank Schatzing's amazing novel is a publishing phenomenon with translation rights sold around the world, drawing rave reviews for both pulsating suspense and great scientific knowledge. The world begins to suffer an escalating and sensational series of natural disasters, and two marine biologists begin to develop a theory that the cause lies in the oceans, where an entity know as the Yrr has developed a massive network of single-cell organisms. It is wreaking havoc in order to prevent humankind from destroying the earth's ecological balance forever. The Americans, under the ruthless General Judith Lee, take a more pragmatic approach than the scientists, seeking to wipe out the being of the deep. The scene is set for a massive confrontation

quote:
For more than two years, one book has taken over Germany’s hardcover and paperback bestseller lists, reaching number one in Der Spiegel and setting off a frenzy in bookstores: The Swarm.

Whales begin sinking ships. Toxic, eyeless crabs poison Long Island's water supply. The North Sea shelf collapses, killing thousands in Europe. Around the world, countries are beginning to feel the effects of the ocean's revenge as the seas and their inhabi-tants begin a violent revolution against mankind. In this riveting novel, full of twists, turns, and cliffhangers, a team of scientists discovers a strange, intelligent life force called the Yrr that takes form in marine animals, using them to wreak havoc on humanity for our ecological abuses. Soon a struggle between good and evil is in full swing, with both human and suboceanic forces battling for control of the waters. At stake is the survival of the Earth's fragile ecology—and ultimately, the survival of the human race itself.

The apocalyptic catastrophes of The Day After Tomorrow meet the watery menace of The Abyss in this gripping, scientifically realistic, and utterly imaginative thriller. With 1.5 million copies sold in Germany—where it has been on the bestseller list without fail since its debut—and the author's skillfully executed blend of compelling story, vivid characters, and eerie locales, Frank Schatzing's The Swarm will keep you in tense anticipation until the last suspenseful page is turned

Well we have the crazed military against noble scientists. But where is the Evil Corporation that wants the creatures for their bioweapons division?

Yeah, everyone knows about the Yrrr life force. I think a world renowned scientist at a prestigious university did a Nobel prize winning paper on it.

And where did they come up with the female general? Everyone knows that only white American males are capable of being jingoistic idiots.

So, is the Yrr related to the Earth Mother Gaia? And if so, who gets custody of Captain Planet?

Did Ted Turner know when he portrayed Gaia sympathetically in "Captain Planet and the Planeteers," does any worshiper of Gaia know, what Gaia was like? Anyone who knows beans about Greek mythology knows that Gaia egged her son on to castrate his father. Worshipers of Gaia advocate family violence. And why have the planeteers never been sent to Lake Baikal or the Aral Sea, both of which are echological disaster ares?

Oooh, ohh, is it Monty Python's Life of Brian?

*Long Pause*

...are there any women here today?

On topic, how exactly would you pronounce "Yrr"? Is this the name the entity gives itself?

Has anyone read the book?
