Invariably this question comes up in chat rooms wherever sci-fi fans gather. And the separate thread on the Sci-Fi channel got me thinking: with so much Star Trek spread across cable (DS9 is on Spike TV... go figure), would you like to see all those shows pulled in under one banner, creating one-stop-shopping for Trekkers while freeing up broadcast time on other cable outlets?

I figure it would go something like this: twice a day you'd see episodes from Trek episodes in syndication.

Star Trek
Star Trek (Filmation)
ST: TNG
ST: DS9
ST: V
Enterprise

That would eat up eleven hours a day. You could run those episodes from noon to midnight, or start later in the afternoon until the wee hours of the morning.

But what to do with the other thirteen hours? Run the Trek movies? Nah, not enough films to go around. It would be like Sci-Fi's Saturday anime, which someone already mentioned.

A better idea: fill most of the regular broadcast time with reruns of either Roddenberry-related shows or shows linked to Trek stars. Shows like:

Earth: Final Conflict (Roddenberry "created")
Andromeda (Roddenberry "created")
In Search Of (hosted by Nimoy)
Mission Impossible (the Nimoy "Paris" years)
Babylon Five (a longshot, but hey, it's got Walter Koenig)
Quantum Leap (Scott Bakula)

and so on.

You could also devote an hour each weekend to otherwise unconnected TV episodes which nonetheless hold a special place in the Trek canon (e.g. Shatner and Nimoy's guest appearances in The Man from Uncle). The remainder of programming time could be devoted to Behind-the-Scenes interviews with everyone whoever worked on anything Trek... heck, you could devote a thousand hours just on that alone.

My question isn't do you think they'll ever do something like that. They probably won't. The question is: if such a network did exist, would you bother to watch? How would you make it better?

I would watch such a channel, methinks. The main reason I don't watch Star Trek shows right now is because I can't keep track of the various channels, shows, and timeslots (UPN? TNT? Spike? TNG? Voyager? DS9?).

I think it's a great idea to feature Star Trek "guest spots" on other shows... for instance, Shatner's and Nimoy's guest spots on COLUMBO could be shown. Shows that do elaborate homages to Star Trek (like that one FUTURAMA episode) could be featured as well, maybe even with little "bookends" by people involved with Star Trek (like they do for the "Mystery" segments on PBS).

Although it has nothing to do with Star Trek aside from its star, I think it'd be priceless to see some TJ HOOKER reruns.

I forget what channel it was on, but there was a show called "Star Trek 2.0" where they had a running tally of stuff like Kirk "Falls out of command chair", Uhura "Touchs earpiece", Spock "Says Fasinateing!" and stuff. It had a score board like the stock market!

It's on G4, and it's really dumb. Star Trek doesn't need jazzing up like that. I think they also show non-screwed-with episodes on Saturdays, and it wouldn't surprise me if that got better ratings.

You know Grand Funk, don't you? The wild, shirtless lyrics of Mark Farner? The bong-rattling bass of Mel Schacher? The ... adequate drumwork of Don Brewer?

That seems a bit much and probably not very profitable in this dvd/netflix age when you can just rent the episodes you want to see when you want to see them.

Granted, Star Trek has a lot of material. However, it would quickly grow stale. You need enought variety and bringing off the shelf and putting back on once in awhile to keep it fresh.

Let's face it, the internet is going to kill a lot of channels in the end. Once the library gets large enough, you'll just download what you want for a couple of bucks. I think dinosaurs like me are the only thing keep TV alive. The younger generations are going to find it archaic to have to watch shows at a specific time.

They should have a half hour show where a panel of four or so geeks discuss each episode, character, or significant arc. It could be called The McNerdlin Group.

Both EricB and Terrahawk are both correct that DVD and the Internet are slowly squeezing out "conventional" TV. But remember that there are new generations of potential fans being born every day who haven't seen the show before. It's doubtful they'd plunk down ninety bucks for a season's worth of episodes sight unseen.

That's where a Trek channel comes in. Watch it for free. Like it? Now go out and buy the DVD set.

I wouldn't like a separate Trek channel, but you know what I WOULD like? For some broadcast network (NBC seems most appropriate) to take the classic Treks and show 'em again. In prime time. I may be insane, but I have this gut feeling that that would turn out to be incredibly popular.

Speaking of DVD sets, why in the world are the ST DVD sets about double the price of any other well remembered series? For instance, Magnum PI, which has a decent following runs at about $40. Other, less memorables series, run in the $20-$30 range. Meanwhile, ST runs in the $100 range. (These are Best Buy prices). The only other series close to that is Babylon5 at around $80. The only thing I can think of is that SciFi geeks are suckers. I know the price has kept me from buying any of the series. No single season of any series, to me at least, seems to be worth more than $50.

I think with iTunes and other places offering episodes for $2 apiece and internet reviews, it will be easy and relatively cheap to sample any series and determine it you want to buy a set.

Just wait for them to somehow add in commerials. :-)

I really like Star Trek, grew up with that as one of my benchmarks of what science fiction could be like on television.

Would I watch a Star Trek channel? My gut instinct says "No," but then I haven't had (broadcast or cable) TV for some time now. If I did get it, and there was a Star Trek channel, I might never leave the couch.

A Trek Channel would be good. However, I MIGHT get my cable turned back on if they started a Law&Order channel.

As for the Trek Channel: To fill out their schedule a little bit and give folks something they hadn't seen before, they could add a bit of comedy to the line up with a Mad Movies/'Tiger Lily' rendition of old TOS and TNG episodes, creating just nonsense plots and bad overdubbing for comedic effects.
