quote: Edible, lab-grown ground chuck that smells and tastes just like the real thing might take a place next to Quorn at supermarkets in just a few years, thanks to some determined meat researchers. Scientists routinely grow small quantities of muscle cells in petri dishes for experiments, but now for the first time a concentrated effort is under way to mass-produce meat in this manner.
Henk Haagsman, a professor of meat sciences at Utrecht University, and his Dutch colleagues are working on growing artificial pork meat out of pig stem cells. They hope to grow a form of minced meat suitable for burgers, sausages and pizza toppings within the next few years. [...]
I'm not sure what disturbs me the most here - my mental image of test tube meat *nearing* the dinner table (menacingly), the fact that it brought The Undertaker and His Pals to mind, or my simple realization that there is such a position as "professor of meat sciences."
As for the pharmed meat, I'm not touching it 'til they have it in Angus.

Sadly, as a graduate of Iowa State University, I was well aware of the post before. I also knew a guy who competed in the national meat judging competition, another thing I hadn't been aware existed until then.
And if the meat is grown in a lab they could, in theory, make it as big as they want. Imagine a single ham that could feed a town! Would be hard to cook, though.

A single ham that could feed a town? Wouldn't William Shatner qualify for that? |

I once read something even more disturbing, than some scientists were studying if it was possible to genetically alter livestock so they were composed only of "usable" parts. Imagine a chicken composed only of legs and wings, for instance.
The tagline was something like "Why waste time and energy growing the non-profitable parts?"
And it was a perfectly sound article in a serious magazine.
I'll still eat chicken, though. |

Those 'inedible parts' are pretty important to the chicken herself.
But the pharmed meat sounds interesting. I doubt it's as tasty as a joint of free-range roast beef, but it could replace the mechanically recovered meat used for chicken nuggets and other monstrosities.
Interesting post, thanks Paul. |
