According to the IMDB, Mako died on Friday. Strangely enough, they mention "The Ugly Dachshund" among his credits, but omit both "Conan The Barbarian" and "Samurai Jack."
His Aku on "Samurai Jack" was a wonderful villain, menacing and funny at the same time. |

Oh man- Mako was one of my favorite actors. Aku was a terrific character and no good B movie fan could ever forget Mako in Conan. Did any of you ever see Miike's The Bird People In China?? He was great in that one too.

No movie with oriental background will be the same without him, but his demise should make us realize how much people like him, James Shigeta or Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa have contributed to our viewing pleasure.
Not to mention the great and only Al Leong. |

Ironically I was watching The Sand Pebbles the other night; without a doubt one of Mako's finest screen hours.
Also worthy of note: Testament, one of Mako's few roles from the 80s on where he wasn't cast as either a ninja/samurai/kung fu master or as some mystical wizard. He got to play a regular guy, just a human being. |

It's sort of sad, you know, many of these Asian-american actors end up hamming it up as ninjas / yakuzas / stuff like that to pay the bills, but many of them are amazing actors. I was lucky enough to see Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa in American Me, a film by Edward James Olmos, and he was amazing in a supporting role.
At least Mako was able to leave in a high note with Memoirs of a Geisha, I wouldn't want to remember him as that man from Highlander III or Kanemitsu from RoboCop 3. Ironically, he's OK in both roles, but those movies are the worst of the worst. |

He seemed to be everywhere you turned. An amazing actor who did a tremendous service for Asian-American actors in this country. I used to have a running joke with my wife where I would turn to her and say "There's Mako". The funny part was that, by doing that, it seemed we were watching him in a film or a TV show at least once a week! He will surely be missed.
