Strangely enough, I've recently been to a couple of museums that addressed a couple of points brought up in two films reviewed here:
1] "Sabertooth tiger" is now an obsolete term. It's now believed smilodons or sabertooth cats were most closely related to cheetahs, but hunted like jaguars, pouncing from surprise.
One of the truly neat suggestions is that smilodons were social cats who may have hunted in packs. I'm sorry, but despite the wretched film reviewed here, I still think a pack of 450 pound jaguars vs. campers or hunters could make for a cool movie.
2] Orcas are not monogamous. While there are solitary orcas, most live in the pod they were born into. In mating season, two pods will drift together, fertile adults mate, and the males return to their own pod. It's likely the males never even see their kids.
Yes, the film is even stupider than you thought.

Also, since tigers and other big cats reach maturity in two years or thereabouts, why add a plotpoint about accelerating the smilodon's development? Saying the smilodon was born two years ago doesn't sound too unreasonable.
