Hoo mama!
When it comes to actors embarrassing themselves, Shatner will be the touchstone for years to come.
Here are the highlights:

If he's straight, then he's putting on a hell of an act. Wouldn't you say?

That's the secret of his success, I believe. He laughs at himself harder than anyone else and, in so doing, defuses much of the rancor that surrounds him, and keeps laughing all the way to the bank.

It was a classic and I made mention of it in my blog. Betty White was outstanding. I was also glad to see George (Sulu) get in a shot of his own after being teased constantly for being gay.

He wasn't always like that. I recall he was a touch more full of himself in the early 90's. Thank goodness he's learned better.
BTW has anyone used the "Roasting Shatner? I thought I smelled ham cooking" joke yet? |

I caught this on the tube, and thought it was a very mixed bag.
First of all, raunchy humor and insult comedy isn't really my cup of tea, but that sort of thing is to be expected from a roast like this. I thought all the young comics (who were totally unknown to me) did a pretty mediocre job. I noticed that many of them relied on printed sheets, which seemed rather unprofessional to me. George Takei, on the other hand, had excellent delivery of his zingers, and he could easily be a stand-up comic. Jason Alexander was a decent host.
I liked some of the little details, like the women dolled up as green Orion slaves girls in the background. I liked the use of film clips, including such obscure (and Jabootu-worthy) films such as White Comanche and Kingdom of the Spiders. I was pleased when the host made a joke about the Esperanto horror film Incubus, and I wondered how many people watching had any idea what he was talking about.
The editing left a lot to be desired. I could have done without the rather sad attempts at comedy by Farrah Fawcett, and I could have done with a lot more from Fred Willard, who is always good.
The highlight of the evening, in my opinion, was the re-creation of the character of Balok from "The Corbomite Manuever." That was brilliantly done.
Reality is a crutch for people who can't face up to science fiction. |
