Although I've been cheerleading MST3K in other threads, truth-to-tell I've only very, very recently become a full blown MSTie. I missed the show's Comedy Central run entirely and only vaguely remember it on Sci-Fi (mainly the Squirm episode and a few others). Thanks to the wonders of DVD and VHS, that's changed, and that's where you guys come in.

I rented the Essentials collection early this year, loved it, and will certainly be adding it to my Christmas list this year. This week I rented set 7 (Killer Shrews, Prince of Space, etc.) As for the remaining sets: haven't seen them, never saw the original episodes, and in many cases never even saw the original movies. So which of the current Rhino collections do you think are the best buys?

My personal tastes: I like Joel and Mike, so no favoritism there. However, having read many reviews on Amazon, the impression I'm forming is that the later Mike episodes (Sci-Fi years) became increasingly mean and nasty in tone. This I can personally attest to, having watched Squirm and taken great offense at some of the vicious cheap shots directed at Southerners ("They all hate us, why don't we just admit it?"). And I'm not even from the South. So, if it matters, I prefer the gentler tone of the Joel and early Mike years best.

I've got them all. It's an incredibly tough call to make, but I'd say that if I had to rescue only one set from a fire, it would be (coincidentally) #7 with "Prince of Space" and two Hercules films.

Well...I haven't seen them all, but that sure as hell won't stop me from offering an opinion. (For the record- I have taken a cursory glance of the sets over at Amazon and found that either through my personal video library or my County Library I have seen a majority of the eps). The first one I'd get is definitely #2 on the strength of Cave Dwellers and Pod People alone- very very classic Joel. Plus, I have always loved the shorts. (I mentioned on another thread that I'm turning my oldest son onto MST3K and these were two of the three eps I used to get him hooked. The other was, of course, Fugitive Alien ).

Sets 2 and 7 are definitely strong ones. I'd recommend 6 and 10...

6: Teenagers from Outer Space, Gunslinger (a little weak, but it's got Beverly Garland AND the hot gal who played the witch Lydia in The Undead), Attack of the Giant Leeches, and some shorts, including Mr. B Natural.

10: Godzilla vs. Megalon, The Giant Spider Invasion, Teenage Strangler, and Swamp Diamonds (haven't seen this, but again, Beverly Garland!)

I hope for set 11 we finally get...well, actually I hope for Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster or the Gamera ones...but I'd also be really happy with Werewolf. We've got 3 of the best Sci-Fi episodes out on DVD (TGSI, Space Mutiny, and Merlin's Shop of Mystical Wonders), and that's great, but where oh where is my whar-woolf?

If you can find it, snap up the single-DVD issue of BEGINNING OF THE END, pulled from shelves due to rights issues.

My recommendation: Buy all the sets. Seriously. The more sales, the more collections we will see.

Oh, yeah, Attack of the Giant Leeches is one of the really weird ones. First, it's got Bruno Vestota, "The Man Who Eats Only Butter." And, I swear, there's a subplot about a shopkeeper with a cheating wife that's actually compelling enough that I sort of wish the film were about that instead of the giant leeches. And I say that as a guy who is filled with giant leech love.

Toss-up between Vols. 4 and 5.

4 has Space Mutiny and Overdrawn at the Memory Bank, while 5 has Time Chasers and The Touch of Satan.

I vote 4. Space Mutiny is an absolute classic and Overdrawn is great too. Volume 1 deserves notice too though; Catalina Capers and The Skydivers- Coleman Francis!!

Vol. 1 also has The Creeping Terror and is also the only set that gives the un-MSTed versions of the films as a bonus.

See my review.

Oh, yeah, forgot to mention, I saw that too. Absolutely one of my top faves, right up there (down there) with Manos. And the host sequences were the best ever.

Set 5...yeah, that is a good one. I'm not wild about Boggy Creek II but the other three are among the highlights of the Sci-Fi years.
Set 4...I love Space Mutiny and Overdrawn at the Memory Bank, but I can wait to buy that one until the price goes down or I find it used. I've got great SP dubs of those two around, and the other two on the disc (Girl in Gold Boots and Hamlet) are among the less amusing of the SFC episodes. Not that I necessarily blame the writers, those movies are just slow and dull and hard to find fun with.

In other news, I MUST HAVE THE BATWOMAN DVD!!!

Is that one of the ones that has the original film on it as well? I know The Brain/Head that Couldn't Die has the original; I also managed to snag Eegah, and was delighted to discover that not only was the original film included, but you could set an option to watch the MSTied version, with the parts of the original they cut out for their purposes put right back in during the fun! It was such a great idea, and if there are other ones like that out there I really need to track them down.

I dunno -- I really liked Hamlet. Not up there with Prince of Space but still a delight.

OK, then it looks like I'm leaning toward 4 & 10 as my next purchases. Thanks for the feedback!

BTW, if anyone's interested, I finished watching 7 and I have to say my favorite of the four movies was The Killer Shrews.

Prince of Space was actually funnier the second time around, for some strange reason. ("Allow me to reference my earlier codacil...")

I'm split on the Herc movies. Hercules Unchained got some good riffing, but Hercules and the Moon Men simply repeated many of the same jokes (enough with the Princess Bride references, already!) And that fifteen minute sandstorm sequence was more painful than anything in Manos... even Joel and the 'bots couldn't make that segment tolerable.
