We're aproaching November sweeps so I'd like to hear what everyone is thinking about the new shows, the directions your favorite returing ones are going in etc. Right now my dark horse favorite is 30 Rock, yes it had a shaky start but I love Alec Baldwin the character actor and I think it has promise. I've allready given up on Studio 60, I liked, nay loved, the first few seasons of The West Wing, but when I think a show is too preachy you've got problems. You?

The blog's seen some talk about this, but I'll gladly throw in.
I'm not normally a huge TV watcher. The last couple of years, the only shows I made a point to catch were The Amazing Race and Lost (although I need to start picking up the Battlestar Galactica DVDs). But there's quite a few new ones I'm taking a shine to...
Favorite show of the new crop is Heroes. The story's moving along nicely, I like most of the characters, and it's really gripping me. The introduction of the supervillian pretty much sealed the deal last week. I'm also enjoying The Nine so far. The premise is not quite what I expected, but not in a bad way. Six Degrees was a little shaky at first, but the stories seem to be cohesing better now, and I've found my interest growing a bit in it.
Then there's Studio 60 and Ugly Betty. I'm mostly watching these for the actors involved. I'll probably give them the season, and unless the plots start becoming a bit more fresh and unpredictable I'll probably end up giving them a pass in the future. I feel more forgiving toward Ugly Betty--there's no preachiness, none of the characters really grate on me (as the female lead in Studio 60 does), and America Ferrara is unbelievably cute in the title role. I hope she has a great career ahead of her. Plus Vanessa Williams seems to be having a blast (and I don't think she's the only one). It's always more fun to watch a show where it looks like everyone's enjoying themselves; I don't get that vibe from Studio 60 for the most part. 30 Rock, at least after the first episode, is in that last group. Alec Baldwin was a trip, Tracy Morgan is usually pretty fun, and I'm a sucker for Tina Fey. But the story was a little weak. I'll give it another go.
Which is more than I can say for 20 Good Years. Not even Tambor and Lithgow can save that, I think. The first show left me with no confidence. I also dropped Smith fairly quickly...that should have worked, but it just didn't seem to. I'm not even sure it's on anymore...I didn't see it listed last week.
Gah. I'm sorry for all that. If anyone actually read all of it, I thank you. And apologize for boring you silly.

Lost and Jericho get my main attention. I also watch Eureka and Monk in the "offseason." I will admit that I watch Battlestar Galactica but only to shout at the TV and make notes on the massive plot holes in the show.

I have to say, despite the fact that better writing seems to be catching on (slowly but surely), I haven't seen anything this year that will get me back in the habit of watching TV. I watch one show right now, The Amazing Race. Anything (And I'll probably watch Scrubs when that comes back on).
else I'm interested in I can catch on DVD. That way, rather than potentially getting interested in a show that is cancelled right away--say, Smith--I can wait until it lasts at least long enough to warrant a DVD set.
That said, I agree that 30 Rock has some promise. The question is whether the show can find its feet before getting cancelled. 20 Good News, in contrast, was a reminder of just how depressingly stupid TV shows can get.
PEGGY: I don't see how having a girl on the team would ruin it. Did a woman judge ruin the Supreme Court? HANK: Yes, and that woman's name was Earl Warren.

I've heard good stuff about Jericho; unfortunately, by the time I heard it, it had been on for a couple of weeks, and I fear I'd miss out on quite a bit by trying to dive in now. Maybe in reruns, or on DVD... Eureka's premise definitely shows promise. I've only caught bits and pieces. I'm sure they rerun it all the time, but that'll be another one for DVD methinks. Here's hoping for 30 Rock...tonight's their next episode.
Studio 60 threw me for a loop this week. The main female character, who to this point's been portrayed as a rigid, borderline-fundamentalist Christian goody-goody, gave an interview to a reporter. The interview included a long soliloquy about where her faith came from and how it affected/affects her...and it was done in a very respectful, thoughtful manner. She was suddenly no longer a caricature, but an actual character. It was rather jarring, but in a good way. That, and the rest of the episode, gave me a bit more hope for it in the future.

I've limited myself to a handful of shows - "Lost," "The Office," and "24" when it comes on. I used to be a faithful "House" watcher, but the show lost me this season.
For me, the best episodes didn't focus on House himself but on either the sub-doctors or the patients. I thought it was better that he maintain a Columbo-esque distance from the audience. This season every episode seems to be House-centric, and it's lost something because of that. The dialogue is getting downright preposterous, too. The main plot of the last full episode I saw involved House getting very involved in a small boy's case, which is uncharacteristic for him. Dr. Wilson, House's buddy/amateur metaphysical psychologist, spouted the following (re: House): "To him, the child... is House. And he needs to... save... himself." |

I think one of the reasons that "House" is focusing more on House is that (and this is true with a lot of shows) as the audience increases, there is always a concern that the technicality of the show will lose some of that new audience if there are not enough soap opera elements to round things out. That's fine, if it doesn't go too far (you do need character development). "House" could easily have dengenerated into a clever "look at the medical twists" show (with some far-fetched medical "conclusions", I might add). The essence of "House" can be taken two ways. A medical detective show or a morality play with medical\detective elements. Whether or not you like the show will, of course, depend on what type of show you prefer. Personally one of my favorite "House" episodes took place entirely within House's own mind. You don't get more "House-centric" than that.
