Love him or loathe him, he had his moments. He passed away today, 81 years young.

Hello Folks:
I wish that when a famouds person dies, the media tells the full story. They forgot to mention that he was co-ploit in a bomber who flew thirty-five combat mission over emeny territory. Jack Palance was a waist gunner on a B-24 in the pacific theater. Beside being brillant entertainers they also served country when it nneded men liked them.

At his best Altman was the best. A true movie origional. His episodes of Combat! were the best of the series. His best movies like The Long Goodbye, McCabe and Mrs Miller, MASH, Gossford Park, Thieves Like US, Nashville all take established genres and turn them on their heads in very sharp and inventive ways.
At his worst this style simply didn't work. Movies like A Wedding, Health (which I saw being filmed), Pret A Porte, Comeback to the Five and Dime Jimmie Dean, etc., are awful, confusing, didactic and awful.
One thing though Robert Altman was not afraid to go his own way and not crawl under a rock after a flop.
