| I guess I could also throw it out there that with their shield technology, the aliens in ID4 didn't really NEED to upgrade their ships, as they were (at least to that point) invincible. |

Maby its like in BATTLETECH. They degenerated, lost the know how to improve, and they can only keep things going with what they have. Hence, useing old designes. Also, they pick on planets like Earth, where the tech is thought too low to give them a good fight.

| It's pretty lame that if the Earthlings had figured out that whole "Shoot at the green beam in the opening" thing earlier that ID4 would have been over after half an hour. I'd think the mother ship would've left after we have destroyed their whole fleet. |

| Assuming, of course, that the primary weapon wasn't protected by the deflector shield. Remember, they had to take down the shields before they could go after the ship itself. |

Let's see. Take down the deflector shield, then shoot the green thingie in the opening at the center of the ship.
Doesn't that sound like the Final Boss behind most videogames? |

And after we drop the shields, let's attack the alien ship that is as big as the island of Manhatten with Sidewinders and Sparrow missiles!
The 20 pound warhead will show them what's what and who's who, by jingo!
Those 2000 lb laser-guided/JDAM thingies we developed to bust up Saddam's bunkers? Nah, better leave those behind. Just get in the way...

But to an unthoughtful observer, it seems like they just hadn't thought of it. You never see them try to shoot into the portal before crop-dusting guy does it. They just went for the hull.
Speaking of him, why does everyone still act like he's crazy for claiming to be abducted even after the saucers show up? I would think this would give some credibility to his claims.

| brandywine, IIRC, the primary weapon port was only open when the aliens prepared to fire. Otherwise there was a mechanical hatch in place over the weapon, preventing their enemies from firing upon it. In the earlier dogbattle (where Wil Smith crash lands and Harry Connick dies) the ship had not yet enabled its primary weapon. Therefore the hatch was sealed and the fighter pilots weren't presented with a target. |

But really, once the shields were down it shouldn't have mattered where they hit the thing so long as they pick the right tools from the toolbox.
Yeah, those 2000 lb bunker busters dropped from 13,000 feet above the ship and set to delay detonation after about 2 seconds probably would've done the trick.
Or you could simply revisit the whole "atomic bomb" idea again. Doesn't really matter where you hit with a B-61 Mk 11. It'll do the job.
But it just wouldn't have been "cinematic" enough if a lone B-52 had cruised over just as the shields came down and dropped 100 or so 1000 lb iron bombs on the alien craft's roof or a lone stealth fighter had loosed a single B-61 that penetrated several meters into the ship before detonating with the force of 3 Hiroshimas.
Nope, had to be fighter planes.
Well, now that I think about it they did nuke the mothership out in orbit. That was very satisfying. |

| Well, the ships were still going from city to city, so they had opportunities. It seemed to me that when the crop-duster's ship hit the beam it kind of turned the ship's weapon against itself like a gun that's been plugged up exploding in your hand and killing YOU. The shields didn't seem to matter because the whole beam is unprotected, and as long as you shoot into the green fireball at the right moment... |
