As I post this, the Oscars are due to air shortly. Having not gone to the movies that much this year, I have not seen most of the nominees and therefore have no favorites. Or non-favorites, for that matter.
Here, therefore, is my list of people who would be nice to see win an Oscar, whether or not they deserve it this year... just, well, because.
Actor
Forest Whitaker. His acting career had pretty much dried up over the past few years, except for a cameo appearance here or an indie film there. Seeing Peter O'Toole win would also be a kick. All these years, not a single Oscar to his credit.
Actress
Either Helen Mirren or Kate Winslet. Mirren is certainly overdue one. Winslet has also been a bridesmaid too many times.
Supporting Actor
Anybody but Mark Wahlberg. Certainly would be great to see little Jackie Earle Haley grab one. From nowhere to the Oscars inside of a year.
Supporting Actress
Cate Blanchett, because (A) she rocks and (B) she's the only actress in that category I've ever heard of.
Original Screenplay
Guillermo del Toro?!! Do mine eyes deceive me? Was this the same guy who directed Blade 2? Wouldn't it be great if he won? Maybe instead of giving a "thank you" speech, he could simply stand there and read aloud Knowles' review for Blade 2 to 3 billion TV viewers.
Well, gotta go. Feel free to turn this thread into anything you want. Predications, faves, hopefuls, post-Oscar rants. Have fun! |

The good news: well it's about time Scorsese won! Need I say more?
The bad news: too damned political. Of course, that's not really news, but.... |

It's about time Scorsese won. I've been a fan of his since "Taxi Driver".

Definitely a "legacy" award for Marty. That's cool, he deserves it. Yay for Helen as well.

Yay for Forrest Whittaker too. I've been a fan of his for a while now. I too got the feeling Martin Scorsese's was a "legacy" award. Kind of like Spielberg's for Schindler's List. I haven't seen The Departed but I wonder if it can truly match up to his past output.
-------------- At least now the count between Scorsese and Three Six Mafia is even up. |

The Oscar voters love big showy roles. Quiet subtle performances and characters usually don't get noticed. Forrest Whittaker's performance and character as the outrageous Idi Amin was tailor made for an academy award. Forrest Whittaker is a fine actor and he does a good job with the part. There are other actors who are just as good but who will always go unnoticed by the academy voters.
Its strange though because when they vote for best picture they ignore the real crowd pleasers and go for what they would consider "arty" movies often movies that no one has seen. I guess that they think that choosing these pictures makes them seem more serious and intelligent than they really are.
On the other hand I did finally see Crash and was astonished by just how good a movie it is.

The Oscar show itself though is a travesty. It has become a fashion show far more than a movie show. So I turn it off and watch the family Guy. The next person who asks a movie actor "Who are you wearing?" should be drawn and quartered.

I wouldn't bother watching the Oscars on my own, but I do go to an annual party, so it is fun to guess who'll win and so on (I actually guessed (and they were just guesses) 17 out of 24 correctly - though missed most of the "big" awards). The only flick I've actually seen is PAN'S LABYRINTH, so that's the one I was rooting for in the catagories it was up for.
I was surprised that the song that one (which I'd picked to win, figuring all those songs from Dream Girls would cancel each other out)was actually a decent piece of music -- the ones from Dream Girls (I'd not seen the movie, so it's the first time I'd heard them)were amazingly awful (a friend said that they were probably aimed at the "American Idol" crowd).

Really? Off the top of my head, best picture Oscars have included Braveheart, Rocky, The Return of the King and Titanic; hardly non-commercial art-house flicks.

I...have not seen the Oscars for over twenty years. This...thing...has become more of a butt munch then it used to be. I don't care what they like, and do not need their opinions. If they agree with me, more power to 'em. If not, what does it matter? Al Gore wins for his diatribe? Anyone suprised? When birds of an expensive feather flock together....
Question : Why does anyone care? Not a snub to you folks...i really want to know. Why? I doubt you live or die by it, as per your movie tastes. I mean, is there a need for mass approbation by people, to see this bunch of rich yahoos give a stately nod to our preferances? Frankly...i don't get it. Now, would i if it actualy had a personal affect on my life? Probably....but...should it? What do you think about it?

Sure the awards are a self-serving travesty. But they are an important part of the industry that we're here to talk about and as such, hard to ignore. And if they happen to make a pick I can agree with, at least on some level, well it's nice to get validation in whatever form it takes...

Culfy makes a good point.
I would like to know how many of these self righteous gasbags come to the Oscars in private jets, take a limo from the airport, stay at a flashy hotel and then preach to the rest of us about ecology.
Remember a tv show called In Living Color where they had two flamboyant film critics doing a hilarious routine called "Men On Film"? I think that one was Damon Wayons. Flipping through the channels just now I came across a show on E! called Fashion Police. This show featured two flamboyant gay guys discussing the fashions in exactly the same way and dressed the same was as the two comics on In Living Color. Life imitating art or the reverse. Funny stuff on that E channel.

Yes, because no one bothered with little arty flicks like Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, Ben-Hur, My Fair Lady, The Sting, Rocky, The Silence Of The Lambs, Forrest Gump, Braveheart, Titanic, or The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Mm hmm. |

Don't forget The Towering Inferno. Now if that isn't a highbrow art film I don't know what is.
