| Help me out here. Which movie utilized the end title gimmick "The End" followed by a big question mark first? Was it The Blob? |

Didn't "The Giant Claw" do that?
One sci-fi movie that was on Mystery Science Theater 300 ended with "The Begining", does THAT count?

Depends. Was it pre or post BLOB?

Didn't The Day the World Ended close with those words? And open with "The End" as well? And I think Larry Buchanan kept that for In The Year 2889.
Neither of those was on MST3K though.
I also think The Blob was the first with that question mark thing.

The first time I ever saw that ending was in The Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Origionally the pods win. Audiences were so disturbed by that ending that a coda was added where the police finally begin to believe that the pods are real. That was in 1956 if memory serves.

Ross, I don't think Body Snatchers ended with a literal question mark; it had the standard "The End" tag. But the question mark was implied.

Well, the narator in "Phantom Planet" says at the end "this is only the begining" but that was made after "The Blob".

It was the short subject "Cheating" that had the question mark at the end. MST3K did that one.

It depends on how you look at it, but this might count.
Vertigo was released four months before The Blob. It doesn't have a question mark after "The End," because it doesn't have a "The End." It goes straight to the studio logo after the final fade-out. If Hitchcock meant for this to imply that it wasn't the end of the story for Jimmy Stewart's character, then he did it quite nicely.
Did I just mention Vertigo in the same post with The Blob? |
