He'll always be Mr. Rachet from Murder on the Orient Express to me.
Adios Richard!

There have been way too many RIPs on the board lately. Check out Widmark's early noir work, much of it available from Criterion.
PEGGY: I don't see how having a girl on the team would ruin it. Did a woman judge ruin the Supreme Court? HANK: Yes, and that woman's name was Earl Warren.

I hate to say it but he was one of those guys that I know by reputation and then can't think of an actual role (apart from the one mentioned in Murder... I need to go track some of those classic early villain roles down.
There sure seems to have been a depressing spate of passings-on lately.

One of my favorite Widmark rolls is in WARLOCK, which is an excellent western.

Try Night and the City, Pickup on South Street, Panic in the Streets (a nice thriller with Widmark against type as a straight arrow hero), and of course, Kiss of Death. Madigan is a more standard cop picture, but a good one and one of Widmark's trademark roles.
Criterion did the DVDs for several of those.

Who wasn't in The Swarm? I swear that movie has the grandest cast of any bad movie ever made. It's like the It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World of b-movies.

| I would recommend The Trap, which is an unofficial (and unsung) modern day remake of Rio Bravo. Unfortunately, it seems to be one of those movies which went out of print on VHS and has never been released on DVD. |

I should also give a shout out to The Bedford Incident.
I loved the ending were Portier keeps asking Widmark what his plan is and he just stands there in silence because he doesn't have one.
