Men like "chick flicks" as much as females:

Yeah, and I have that nice piece of swamp land in Florida. First, the statement that the men and women agree on the is just ludicrous. Guys will typically just give in because the woman will be an absolute pain if you go see "Ninja Knives 7" instead of "Luv's Return" and the result will not be sweet affection from the woman later. Second, men lie like the dogs we are about how affectionate we are. No less than Family Feud had a question on how affectionate men thought they were rated 1-10 (10 being most affectionate). The answer was 8 which no one came close to and caused my wife to laugh. The test isn't what couples watch when they are together but what they watch when they are apart.

According to researchers, there's a very common misconception going around among men. Each man believes himself to be the one exception to the general rule.

As a matter of fact, men stated lower liking of chick flicks when their partner was present. So the explanation that they only pretended to like it to please their partner is untrue. Quite the opposite.

I may not like bad romantic movies, like Gigli, but I definitely loved Moulin Rouge. And if that's not a romantic movie, what is?

I think with men, it's more of a question to what they can relate to in the scenario presented, rather than the emotions, themselves. Of course, this is a broad generalization, since there are many men who operate at a deep emotional level. Asta Kask's comment about men not liking chick flicks as much while watching with their partners makes sense, since men may be reluctant to shown vulnerable emotions in front of their partners. But let's face it - men and women are wired differently, for the most part.
As for me, I enjoy "Light in the Piazza" as much as "Iron Monkey", but I'll be watching "Iron Monkey" with my wife.

I'm pretty sensitive and all that stuff (hell I even have 2 cats) but I hate romances and romantic "comedy" and my favorite movie is a toss up between The Good, The Bad and The Ulgy and Once Upon a Time in the West.

To be honest, I've turned to comedies, even romantic comedies, once or twice when I got tired of my usual selection of thrillers / sci-fi & westerns. But what few comedies I saw made me forget about making them part of the regular menu.

I was on a cross country flight a couple of years ago and the inflight movie was some Lindsey Lohan romantic comedy (something Luck[y] something or other). Of course I didn't bother getting the head phones and read and tried to sleep while it was on, though I would look up at it from time to time. The amazing thing about it was that the story was such pure cliche that I could look up at it without having followed the plot or having heard any of the dialogue and know exactly what was happening when I'd take the occasional peek.

This is why I think a better gauge of likes is what would the guy watch when he is alone. Sure I might find a romcom that is good. But, it's unlikely I'm going to rent it again on my own. Self-reporting social studies are tricky things at best. Respondents are driven by all sorts of factors to give the "right" answers.

I think I'm a pretty sensitive guy, in touch with my feelings and all of that. I actually do like a good romantic movie- with a BIG emphasis on "good". And there just aren't that many. Most so-called "chick flics" leave me pretty cold. I'm not into anything my Nora Ehpron. I get no kick from the exploits of Hugh Grant. I have a feeling I'd cheer at the end of Steel Magnolias (never sat through it). I did have to watch Beaches once and I wanted to claw my own eyes out- in fact that really needs to be a Jabootu review (it isn't one, is it??)

I find that most romantic movies I like seem to be foreign (or should I say, non-Hollywood) for whatever reason. For instance, Comrades, Almost a Love Story is brilliant- I could watch it 100 times. And Chunking Express too, speaking of Hong Kong.

Thats the sad thing.
When you don't need diologue to get it all. I can do the same thing with most comic books...sure pictures are part of the deal, but still...

Rom coms are as formulaic as slasher movies; they're just more societally acceptable. Meet Cute, Fall in Love, The Big Misunderstanding, False Crisis, Break Up, Real Crisis, Realize You Still Love Them, Get Back Together. Roll credits.

It's an accident of sociology that these are remotely acceptable. If the same disreputable audience of teenage idiots were huge into romantic comedies they'd be as despised as the SAW films.

Hmm, considering that over the past, oh, 500 years or so, the "romantic comedy" has been a staple of drama, and most of the authors were men, I would think that the men are protesting too much.

There are, of course, scarcely any GOOD romantic comedies made any more, since Hollywood has hardly any faith in romantic love any more. But romance, like any other important human emotion, can be covered equally well as either tragedy or comedy. The tragedy today is that so few romantic comedies remain - it's sort of like dissing the "romantic fiction" genre because of Harlequins, and forgetting that it also produced Jane Eyre.

Yeah, that's a much better way of putting what I was trying to articulate. I'll watch a good version of Sense and Sensibilityor something along those lines all day long. To me that's not a chick flic or rom-com; it's adapted great literature.

Of course, now that I think about it Jane Austen was really good but adding, say, a few graphic beheadings or maybe a giant lizard would only make the material even better... hmmm, I feel a screenplay coming on....
