One of my daily web visits is Menéame, a Spanish website that recollects news and trivia from all over the world. Today one of the entries was about an amazing set of colour pictures taken during WWII. Apart from their outstanding technical quality, I was surprised of different they look from movies that try to recreate the era.
Because always expect WWII era pics to be either B/W or in worse condition than this particular set, they produce an strange effect on the viewer. Everything, from the light, the clothes or the state of the equipment, seems somehow out of place.

Wow, those are really amazing. The depth of field is really something, they have a really 3D feel to them. Also, there's no sense of movement; everything feels frozen in time. The humans all feel very posed and unnatural, but in a cool way. I agree with you, seeing those you realize that even when you dress them in period clothes modern actors just feel anachronistic in modern WWII movies. I don't think they really try and get every detail of the look down in new films because they think the results would make modern audiences unable to relate to the film. There would be a disconnect. And to get that kind of overall look you need a really visual and technically savvy director and there aren't really many like that any more. You need a Kubrick; someone who knew how to take still photographs.

Nice! Good call Nev. The A-20 Havoc is the first plane, then the B-25s and those cannon armed A-36s look way cool. Great stuff for an old 'wing nut' like me.
