Not to mention Uncle Forrie -- his movie appearances were little more than forgettable cameos, but his contributions as a genre film historian and the First Real Fanboy are more important than most people realize.

I posted the TCM Remembers video for this year at the main site's blog. Really, really depressing.

PEGGY: I don't see how having a girl on the team would ruin it. Did a woman judge ruin the Supreme Court?
HANK: Yes, and that woman's name was Earl Warren.

Another actor who died in 2008 was Jack Douglas. Lovers of bad movies, and I suspect that includes many reading this BBS, will recall Jack Douglas from his many appearances in the British Carry On movies. These are a long series of British comedies that are far more annoying than they are funny. There are dozens of them going back nearly 50 years and they are, well, awful.

Those who love good movies morn the death of Heath Ledger the brilliant Australian actor who died from a seemingly accidental drug overdose. The sad fact is that most of these overdoses are not really accidental.

Is this just a guy thing?

How could you leave out Beverly Garland?

Also, Anita Page, who starred in Broadway Melody, the first musical to win an Oscar, died this year at the age of 96.

Thank you AnnGora for beating me to the punch re: Beverly Garland.

And granted she's not so famous, but I will always adore Roberta Collins for her role as "Matilda the Hun" in Death Race 2000.

Ann Savage.

Also, I think Bettie Page deserves a holler.

And today we can add a new name, writer Donald Westlake, best known as the creator of Parker, the badass but highly creative criminal played by Lee Marvin and Mel Gibson in the movie world.

Mystery Writer Westlake Dies

2 January 2009 4:08 AM, PST

Oscar nominated writer Donald Westlake has died at the age of 75.

The prolific author collapsed on Wednesday following a suspected heart attack while on his way to attend a New Year's Eve dinner with his wife, Abigail, during a sunshine break in Mexico.

During Westlake's long and successful writing career he earned an Academy Award nomination for his screenplay for 1990 movie, The Grifters, as well as winning three Edgar Awards and the title of Grand Master from the Mystery Writers of America in 1993.

A string of his novels were adapted for the big screen, including Lee Marvin's Point Blank in 1967 and The Hot Rock, starring Robert Redford, in 1972.

Westlake also worked on the script for 1997 James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies.
