Description
Rough justice has often been served in the pages of serial novels, notably beginning with Don Pendleton’s The Executioner in 1969. This is the first overview of the serial vigilante genre, which featured such hard-boiled protagonists as Nick Carter, Mark Stone, Jake Brand and Able Team among the 130 series that followed Pendleton’s novel. Serial vigilantes repeatedly take the law into their own hands, establishing and imposing their own moral standards, usually by force. The book examines the connections between the serial vigilante and the pulp hero that preceded him and how the serial vigilante has influenced a variety of tough guys, private eyes, spies and cops in different media. A complete bibliography for each series is featured.

I actually found some Penetrator novels from a helpful used bookstore for less than seventy cents, so this title caught my interest.

I find it interesting that, despite the view that Death Wish inspired many knock-offs, it did not inspire many series of films or books, since other than the Exterminator (1980, followed by one sequel in 1984) I can think of no vigilante film and its sequel released within the ten years (1974-1984) of the film Death Wish's release, and the vigilante paperback boom had started before Death Wish the novel (1972) and film came out.

(Slight caveat; the Angel film series started in 1984 and continued for four entries to 1993. However, obviously, since the first film came out in 1984, it and its sequel did not both come out within ten years of Death Wish's release the way the Exterminator and Exterminator 2 did. Also, Robert Ginty was the only actor other than Charles Bronson to return as a vigilante character between 1974 to 1984 that I know of.)

After reading your write-up I thought "there must have been some vigilante movies that came out during this time frame." So I did a little research and went looking. But, you are right; very few were actually made. However, I did find a couple of vigilante movies that came out between '74-'84. First one was named aptly enough " Vigilante" from '83. It starred and Robert Forster and Fred Williamson.

Here's the synopsis from IMDB: "When his wife is attacked and son killed by gang members, a New York factory worker joins a secret, outside-the-law, vigilante group made up of ex-cops whom target and kill criminals whom repeatedly get away with murder through legal courtroom technicalities." Written by Anonymous.

Then there's the Star Chamber starring Micheal Douglas which also came out in '83.

And then there's "Dirty Harry" Callahan who as we all know is a police officer forced to go vigilante to get the bad guys. The first Dirty Harry movie actually came out in '73, a year before Death Wish so you could say that it doesn't count.

Note that except for the Dirty Harry movies neither Star Chamber or Vigilante had any sequels.

Thanks for bringing up The Exterminator, I was trying to think of its name a couple of weeks ago. Enjoyed the movie when it first came out. Interesting enough I don't think I've ever seen the movie since. And I was unaware of a sequel.

"When you have to shoot, shoot, don't talk."

I wanted to emphasize that other than the Exterminator, I can think of no vigilante film other than Death Wish which received a sequel during 1974-1984.

So, yes, one saw many singleton, one-off vigilante films, but other than Death Wish and The Exterminator, none received a sequel during 1974 to 1984.
