The watchmen was one of the most prompted and hyped movies in years yet it seems to have come and gone without leaving so much as a footprint. I never even saw it reviewed. What happened? Has anyone seen it? Is it Jabootu worthy?

It was good but was probably never going to appeal to much more than a niche market. I think it did okay box office wise, it at least didn't lose a huge amount of money, and the reviews I saw were quite positive.

The reviews I read were in the line of "Very good, but for fans only". I did enjoy the previous films by Zack Snyder, and as soon it is out in DVD I'm renting it. I just didn't feel like watching a three hour superhero movie in theatres.

I didn't see it but most the reviews I read were tepid to hostile. My roommate had the comic book (aka graphic novel) so I actually knew the story. My take on why it flopped is:
- It was a hard "R" film. From language, sex, and rape, to full frontal male nudity, it deserved the rating and as such cut down on it's audience.
- Zack Snyder seems to be a love or hate'em director.
- Snyder made the decision to follow the comic in an almost frame by frame translation. Mediums usually don't transfer so directly. It made the fan boys happy but I don't know about normal viewers.
- Fan boys touted "The Watchmen" as this deep and revolutionary comic. The comic may have been revolutionary in the 80's, but 20 years later other comic hero movies have already hit a lot of the same themes. Basically, it was over-hyped in forums where you might attract a more casual theater goer. Also, I wasn't real impressed when I read it originally.
- The story can easily confuse someone because it takes place in an alternate time line.
*** SPOILER ***
In the end the story is about one set of heroes creating a false alien threat to unify earth and prevent a nuclear holocaust. Meanwhile, another set is following clues that lead them to discover that secret. Now, the concept of creating an external threat to unite earth has been around since at least the 50's. So, the payoff at the end is not that dramatic. That means you really need good characters to carry the film. The characters in "The Watchmen" stink. In the end, you are stuck liking the insane guy because he actually has some morals.
