Since 2009 is halfway over, perhaps it's time to note that this is indeed the 25th anniversary of the movie year 1984. Never before have so many films, both good and bad, made such an impact on pop-culture for future generations.

Skeptical? Then foist your eyes on just some of the movies released during that auspicious cinematic year:

Ghostbusters
Beverly Hills Cop
The Karate Kid
Gremlins
Police Academy
Footloose
Splash
Purple Rain
Bachelor Party
The Natural
Revenge of the Nerds
Red Dawn
The Terminator
The Gods Must Be Crazy
A Nightmare on Elm Street
Star Trek 3: The Search for Spock
This is Spinal Tap
Sixteen Candles
Breakin'
All of Me
The Neverending Story
Dead Calm
Romancing the Stone
Nausica of the Valley of the Wind
Repo Man
Night of the Comet

Not to mention the release of such prestigious films as:

Once Upon a Time in America
The Killing Fields
Amadeus
Blood Simple
A Soldier's Story
Places in the Heart
A Passage to India

As well as craptacular sequels like

Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter
Conan the Destroyer
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
2010
Cannonball Run 2
Oh, God, You Devil

Of course, 1984 also brought us the remake of 1984, but that's a no-brainer, isn't it? And lastly, if anyone has forgotten, 1984 was the year that brought us David Lynch's Dune. No self-respecting Jabootube could allow that one to slip by.

So let's take a moment to tip our caps. 1984. We may never see its like again. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing I'll leave to you.

Wow, never realized so many good films that year. It would be interesting to see why it happened. I can't really be objective as I grew up during that time, but I wonder what the current generation would think of those films? For instance, ignoring the dated effects, how would a teenager today view Ghostbusters? I would hate to see what the "jokes" would look like if the film was made today.

2010 was a decent film (note: see Brad's minion review)

Oh, good. I thought that my constant contention that pop culture produced more memorable work in my childhood was simply "Old Geezer Syndrome." It's gratifying to know that, no, it's objectively true.

Footloose and Purple Rain had an impact on pop-culture? I must of been imitating Rip Van Winkle that year and missed it!

Updated the list to include several glaring oversights, like Blood Simple (D'oh!)
