This goes along with the thread dealing with the prequel to Alien. I'm not sure I'm interested in a prequel, in this case. Back stories can work, sometimes - sometimes, not so much (see X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)and some hideous examples from the Star Wars franchise). When I was a kid, I wanted to know what happened with the Mars civilization in It! The Terror From Beyond Space (1958) (which, ironically, is related to Alien) - but I don't think it would have made for a good movie. So - any thoughts on successes and failures regarding prequels?

Hey all.
I actually can't remember a single prequel that really worked for me, either in literature or cinema. The lack of dramatic tension that comes from knowing what is going to happen is an added barrier to the story succeeding. It CAN be done, I think, but it takes storytelling of the highest order. For instance, in Apollo 13, (most) people know exactly how it is going to end, yet the ride is so fantastic that it doesn't really matter.
Can anyone think of a single prequel that really worked?

| Interestingly, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly was a prequel. |

I agree. While watching "For A Few Dollars More", I realised that "GB+U" comes first, "Dollars More" shows that Blondie did time for stealing the gold (And his "skin game" with Tuco) and was pardoned, then he became a REAL bounty hunter in "Fistfull".
An early "prequal" was "Nyoka And The Tigermen". It shows her finding her father in (Apparently) pre-war Italian territory when he was killed in the previously-made "Jungle Girl", which was nicely recapped here by John Nowak.

I can't think of any that have really worked well. A story, like the aforementioned "Apollo 13," is different than a prequel. It is a self contained story that has a known ending. Prequels end up having to spend a lot of time tying into previous films which tend to suck the life out of them.

| If you watch every series in reverse then nearly every prequel is a masterpiece. |

Good catch - that was why I used that for the title of this thread :)
