I'm going to be up in Wheeling, IL in early/mid October for a chess tournament. Anyplace interesting to eat while I'm up there? Can't be to far away unless I get slaughtered quickly which is all too possible.

You can always google search restaurants in the area. I live in Chicago myself, and I don't think I've ever been in Wheeling!
You play in Chess Tournaments?? I used to do that -- Last time I was in one was in 1989; thought it might be interesting to get back into that. What is your rating?

| Getting even more OT.... Terra, what's your rating? (For the record, I've never had an official rating, but I think my official chess title could be Patzer Extraordinaire.) |

I played in a couple of tournaments in HS and then started playing again about 10 years ago. Typically, I only play in one or two local tournaments a year but decided to splurge and go to a big tournament this year. I decided it was a relatively cheap hobby that worked well with having a family. I have the absolutely awesome 1404 rating. It pretty much puts me in the lower middle of the pack. Yes, Kasparov fears me....because I would bore him to death as he destroyed me. :-)
Luckily this is a class tournament. That means I'll be competing against people in the 1400-1599 range. Well, competing may be too strong. I'll be at the same board.

Hey that's cool -- competing in your own "Class" does even things out, and if your brain just happens to be in the right state, you can do very well! Here in the Huge Humongous city of Chicago, there doesn't even seem to be a real chess club around anymore -- well I've not really looked hard, but the last time I set foot in one must have been about 10 years ago; the club was in an apartment building basement, and it smelled like a sewer (that place is now gone), played a few "skittles" games, and never found the time to go back.
Twenty years ago, I did enjoy going to Tournies at the Chicago Chess Center every two weeks or so, but then I got a job sitting at a desk looking at Micofiche & newspapers all day, and the Tournies started feeling like work (hard work!) -- and I kind of lost my enthusiasm (dropped from 1865 to 1806). Now that I've got a job that isn't beating my brain up (now I'm a walking courier), I thought it might be fun to play again.
I hope You have a successful tournament, Terrahawk!

Thanks Bobby-G. Very nice rating you have there. I can only look and admire the Class A players. I predict I will run into some 10 year old with an eleven character last name but only two vowels and who studies with a grandmaster. I will then play an opening that will have been the main course of study for said 10 year old.

Don't worry, Terrahawk, all the 10 year olds will be in the expert/master section!

| Take it from someone who knows: being schooled in chess by a ten-year-old is a humbling experience. |

Coincidentally, Superdawg is opening a new Wheeling location in October, though the most specific date I could find was "mid October." (http://www.topix.com/forum/city/buffalo-grove-il/TRQT73FQ6C7AJ6O8M)
Might not be ready in time for your visit, but I'd rate it as a "must-do " if it is.

Paul is right; unfortunately, the Wheeling Superdawg won't open until November. The regular Superdawg is about a half hour from Wheeling, though, and is worth trip.
Walker Bros. for breakfast foods. Gino's East for pizza, the one in Rolling Meadows might be the best. Portillo's is good for Italian beefs.
Drop me a line with details of when you're in town, maybe we can grab a bite.

Please do. Wheeling is fairly close to us; we're out by O'Hare, more or less.
How long will you be in town?

We're coming in the 9th on which I have an evening game. Then we're leaving the 11th after the 5th round finishes. Probably not much time in there but like I said, if I get the chance I'll drop you a line. Thanks.
