Nothing Sacred.
Columbia Pictures is back in the dojo with a new version of the 1984 hit "The Karate Kid," which has been refashioned as a star vehicle for Jaden Smith. The film will be produced by Jerry Weintraub (who launched the original franchise) and Overbrook Entertainment's James Lassiter, Will Smith and Ken Stovitz. Will Smith, who is the 10-year-old actor's father, co-starred alongside Jaden in his feature debut, "The Pursuit of Happyness," which Overbrook and Escape Artists produced for Columbia.
The script is being written by Chris Murphy, and the film will shoot next year in Beijing and other cities. While the new film will be set in that exotic locale, it will borrow elements of the original plot, wherein a bullied youth learns to stand up for himself with the help of an eccentric mentor.

Jackie Chan has claimed that the Karate Kid remake will be renamed Kung Fu Kid.
The Rush Hour star, who will play martial arts mentor Mr. Miyagi in the '80s reworking, told 3 News: "They don't want to call it Karate Kid anymore. They want to call it Kung Fu Kid."

When did they all decide to just stop being original and just rip off all the old classics? Oh wait...

| Movie remakes have been a staple of Hollywood since the beginning. It was especially true before home video became affordable. Silent movies were made as talkies and then as color and then yet again. The Maltese falcon was made three times in the between 1930 and 1940. In Hollywood nothing succeeds like success. And in their zeal to get properties for hot performers they only need look into the catalog. Its easier and cheaper and has a built in audience. |

The big question is: Is Karate(and any other Japanese martial art) being relegated to the ash heap of pop culture history.
It seems like China has the monopoly on bad ass martial arts. |

It looks like they're making the switch simply because Jackie Chan's the right age to play the role analogous to Mr. Miyagi. (At let's be honest, Chan is a lot more credible as a martial arts master than Pat Morita was.)
As for originality, ripoffs, etc., let's remember that the original Karate Kid was the subject of two direct sequels and an attempted relaunch already. We're not talking about deflowering a virgin here; the franchise has "been around."

Maybe.
But I can't think any recent films that high lighted Karate as the official martial art.
As for Pat Morita, the first film was somewhat creditable. But as things went on, the crediblity fell faster than the Rotten Tomatto rating on a Rob Schnieder flick.

| Gotta love the speed-up fight against the skeletons. Righ out of Power Rangers territory. Is that from the one with Hillary Swank? I found that one lots of fun, although for all the wrong reasons. |

These fights are in order from the first film to the third film.
The group in question was attending a Halloween party. But Daniel made the unwise move of playing a prank on their leader. They almost beat him to death over it. Luckily, Mr. Miyagi interceded.
