Why are bad comedies so painful? It's fairly obvious why they're not funny. But why aren't they just plain ol' boring? Why are they so often embarassing and... well, painful?

I guess because any other genre can produce entertaining movies even if they fail to deliver the basics. It's not the usual, but, hey, it can happen. They have other things to offer, like touching thoughtful topics or having a good cast. But a humourless comedy is just unwatchable on any other level.
I saw Year One a few weeks ago. Not even Jack Balck horsing around could make it watchable. |

But that would just produce boring movies. When comedy goes bad, you're in for deep hurting. "Freddy got fingered," anyone? "Leonard, Part 6"? Any Trek movie or episode with humor as a driving force (except Star Trek IV)?

This is an old hobby horse of mine, and why you don't see a lot a comedies on the site (especially reviewed by me). My general spiel: Movies are bad when they do the opposite of what they are supposed to do. When movies try to scare you and don't, it can be funny. When movies try to make you think and don't, it can be funny. When movies try to make you cry and don't, it can be funny.
When movies try to make you laugh and don't, it's...nothing. Anti-Entertainment. A black hole of suck.
That's my explanation.

Agreed that was well put. An unfunny comedy can't be funny, therefore it has to be something else (repulsive, painful, depressing). Wow, this is like defining a math proof.
