Veteran British actor Edward Woodward has died at the age of 79.

Woodward, best known for his roles in cult horror film The Wicker Man and hit TV series Callan and The Equalizer, passed away in hospital after battling illnesses including pneumonia.

In a statement, his agent Janet Glass says: "Universally loved and admired through his unforgettable roles in classic productions such as Breaker Morant, The Wicker Man, Callan, The Equalizer and many more, he was equally fine and courageous in real life, never losing his brave spirit and wonderful humour throughout his illness.

"He was further sustained by the love of his wife, Michele, children, Tim, Peter, Sarah and Emily, his grandchildren and numerous friends. His passing will leave a huge gap in many lives."

He'll always be McCall from The equalizer to me.

To me, he'll always be "Breaker" Morant.

Adios!

Yep, Breaker Morant was great. I was just thinking I saw Woodward for the last time a few weeks back. I had completely forgotten about La femme Nikita since it aired, but realised I didn't know how the whole thing ended. So I got the last season and was surprised to see they had had the insight to cast Woodward as a retired super-spy. Even in such a daft show packed with robotic acting he managed to inject some class to all his scenes.

Ouch. This one hurts. I've always been a big fan of Woodward, thanks to The Wicker Man and The Equalizer. Also loved him in other, arguably more thankless roles, like his turn in The Final Option (aka Who Dares Wins) and his more recent supporting role in Hot Fuzz.

RIP Mr. Woodward.

Quite a loss. People with style are too few and far between.
I did like watching him act with his son on an ep. of CRUSADE, the Babylon Five follow up series. Also liked his son's work on the (Discovery channe? History?)where he had some folks re-enact combat tactics with period equipment.

He was The Equalizer to me growing up, but nowadays he's Sgt. Howie to me.

A real good one has been lost.

Godspeed, sir.

Thinking back on the The Equalizer, that show always struck me as being some kind of a weird hybrid of Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy and The A-Team.

"If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the A-Team George Smiley Robert McCall."

The question I have is if the show still holds up after all these years, or does the series seem badly dated now?

He played the Ghost of Christmas Present in the George C. Scott version of A Christmas Carol (my personal favorite). Woodward took what could have been a do-nothing part and made it his own; there's a great moment where he gives Scrooge a verbal ass-kicking, and he's clearly furious at the guy.

It may not be one of his better-known roles, but it's what I remember Edward Woodward most for. Yes, that's a compliment.

I haven't heard of that other show, but there were indeed elements of The A-Team in The Equalizer. Not only in the "client-of-the-week" plotting, but also in that more often than not McCall would act altruistically and refuse to be paid.

Luckily, though, it was a far more serious, often dark show, and it rarely descended into the camp that became the signature of The A-Team almost right from the start.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy was actually a TV miniseries starring Alec Guinness as world-weary British intelligence spook George Smiley.

Highly recommended, by the way. Even though it's thirty years old and takes place during the Cold War, it holds up remarkably well. Smiley's People was the sequel, also with Guinness, but don't make the mistake of watching that one first because it contains numerous Tinker spoilers.

Incidentally, a movie remake of Tinker is currently in the works. I cringe to think...
