Saw this last night. From the previews I'd seen, I really wanted to skip this one, but our group couldn't agree on any alternatives.

Anyway, the movie definitely exceeded my low expectations. I'd be curious to hear from any fans of the novels on what is/isn't faithful to the originals.

I'm glad they focused on the quirky relationship between Watson and Holmes and didn't go for some steam punk wet dream. That's what sunk Will Smith's Wild Wild West.

Holmes is played as a kind of downplayed leo Dicapro Howard Hughes type. One who spirals off in to eccentricity if his mind is not occupied. But he still has that deductive power that he's famous for and tends to make people uncomfortable when it is employed. And they've punched up certain details about Holmes that were only a footnote in the books. Like Holmes knowing marital arts and stickfighting(He really did). To there credit, the movie doesn't beat the point to death.

Watson is played again as the audience identifier figure. But unlike previous Watson characters, he's not a blank slate. The movie gives Watson medical duties that Holmes actually has to rely on. For example, in one scene, Holmes needs to know how long a body had been dead for. He stands aside and Watson swoops in and gives Holmes a time based on the size of the maggots around the body. And Holmes just accepts his analysis and moves on. And if you ask me Jude Law(his best role in a while) got the perfect balance of Watson being a perfect English gentleman one minute and then two-fist adventurer the next. You definitely buy that he was a former Army doctor.

The movie is more of a how done it than a who done it. Unfortunately, it holds its card close to its vest. So there's no way the audience can figure it out ahead of time. So we are robbed of finally getting a mystery.

How does it stand with Billy Wilder's first rate odd take on Holems with The Secret Life Of Sherlock Holmes?
