Lions's Gate has involved itself in a Conan revival. It seems Lion's Gate has poised itself as a Cannon for the tens or teens (by which I mean the 2010's, not the tween demographic) instead of just the New Line Cinema of the 2010's (I refer to how New Line Cinema used the Freddy Krueger horror franchise to build itself up the way Lion's Gate seems used the Saw horror series). This seems a sound strategy, as the Saw series seems ready to wind down. As Cannon did, Lion's Gate seems poised to produce adventure films. I would find it interesting if they transition to predominantly adventure films and then cut down their horror output, since they would resemble Cannon even more (Cannon made very few horror films).
Regarding the adventure films that Lion's Gate has put out; I recall that they did two Punisher films, though those did not seem to "bring down the house" (a bit of justice in that, as the creator of the Punisher admitted that he put "a little of the Shadow" in with an enormous amount of Mack Bolan, the Executioner). The Rambo revival with Stallone did just okay.

Many of the prominent R-rated adventure films of the 1970's and 1980's did not adapt pre-existing properties, so, for example, Warner Bros. probably has absolute rights to "Dirty Harry" Callahan since he debuted in a film. The Death Wish series moved around, so perhaps Lion's Gate will handle a revival of that series. |

I wouldn't say that. I think they are trying to do the same as Nu Image, getting out of the b-movie ghetto producing some bigger budget films that show promise. IIRC, Lion's Gate even produced at least one artistic film this last year, the Bad Lieutenant remake starring Nicholas Cage and Val Kilmer.
EDIT: Trying to confirm the Bad Lieutenant thing, I ran across another piece of news, Lion's Gate may end up being the future owners of the Terminator franchise. As I said, they seem to be moving towards the "A" list. |
