On the recent atrociously PC remake of "The Andromeda strain". And how it totally elevates the original to almost Oscar status. To quote Robin, "Holy lame remakes Batman!" To quote Seven of Nine, "It was unworthy of assimilation" To Quote Jack Bauer "Tell the PResident I'm sorry..I cant do this anymore!".
Anyway, A quick shoutout from Ken on this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

| Do you mean that mini that Ridley Scott produced? Yeah, that was dire. It didn't make me mad, though, because I don't think the novel by Crichton or the original film are that good. |

Are you kidding? The original was an edge of your seat, nail biting crisis who's implications were beyond imagining. The (a'hem) remake was just trash designed for today's audience...all PC and all set up for people who have the attention span of a gnat.

I also think the original Andromeda Strain film is quite good. It's actually intelligent, for one thing, and avoids the shortcomings of most modern films (ie, people don't do stupid things because the plot requires it). And it has more gaping wounds and topless young women than any other G-Rated film I can think of...
The original novel had its moments, but it tends to get derailed by Crichton's endless little side-stories. |

The original is a solid film that actually tries to do hard science. Plus, I like that the scientists aren't always right. I would rather watch it than one of the paint by numbers film where everyone ignores the brilliant scientist who is always correct.

Well said! The original film did just that. Nevelle, you might watch the original, then the remake and compare notes. I think it would be interesting if you did a review of both, from your point of view. Do you recall what did most Spanish movie reviews say of the films?

Sadly, I can't really answer your question, because I couldn't bring myself to watch the new one. (It was a made for TV film or mini-series, right?) I love the old one, which I have referred to as the only actual science-fiction movie I know. By that I mean one that isn't really a fantasy, with violations of, oh, the square-cube law or warp drives or whatnot. Really, the new one just looked like crap.

Sadly, you are right--it is such a suckfest that I fear if you did watch it, you would go alot easier on every other movie ever made since this crap would be what you judge all other bad movies to...

Ken, wouldn't you be able to add 2001 to that list of actual hard sci-fi? I'd throw in Moon while we're at it; that was an excellent little film.
I've seen bits and pieces of the remake of Andromeda, and I don't want to see any more. |
