Director of West Side Story, the Sound of Music, The Day the Earth Stood Still, I Want to Live, Star Trek the Motion Picture and the editor of Citizen Kane has died.
Apparently Jabootu visits even the best of them...
RIP, Mr. Wise.
P.S. - BTW, Triv, just out of curiosity, how did you come by your screen name? |

I'm surprised that Sand Pebbles didn't make it in to the biography. But his other films were definately something to be proud of.
Adios, Robert Wise. RIP

This is one of those guys that you don't think of too much.... till you realize they're gone and you're gonna miss 'em.
RIP, Mr. Wise. We need more like you around. |

He's been way underrated since he started doing musicals. They where big hits, but they also marked his career forever.
He also made such fine films like "The Curse of the Cat People" (sequel to "Cat People"), "The Andromeda Strain" and "The Haunting".
"Sand Peeples" is a personal favourite. It is, in the end, a quite muddled film, seeming it can't decide between a celebration of pacifism or an ode to heroism, but it has great acting by McQueen and Richard Attenborough, and its long running time never takes its toll. The action is also very well staged. |

The Sand Pebbles was a fairly good representation of the Gunboat Squadrons;from what I've read, "makeing a good show" was just as important in the old days as your 3inch gun. However, the Chinese were NEVER taken on patrol or to another town as shown in the movie; they were sent ashore and a new group of "Boatmen" (An unfficial rank) were taken aboard.
"The Lonely Ships" is a good source of information about the Far East Squadron. Be sure to get the unabridged edition as the paperback only tells of World War Two.

| The Haunting still remains one of the best haunted house movies ever made, and it's a credit to those involved (Wise included, of course) that unlike most "classic" horror films The Haunting holds up very well when viewed today. |

Absolutely the best ever done. If you haven't seen it - it's a must.
