I'm rather perplexed that none of the pilots I've watched so far this season have been bad enough to warrant immediate abandonment. I simply don't have time to follow Prison Break, Invasion, Surface, and Threshold, especially in addition to NUMB3RS, Lost, 24 and Medium, which I picked up & retained from last & previous seasons. And that's not even counting any previous habits, nor any of my wife's votes (Supernanny, Extreme Home Makeover, Various Apprentices, CSIs and Law&Orders)!

I'm hoping I haven't missed much in whatever pilots I've not caught. E-Ring didn't exactly look like this season's 24, and I'll probably take a pass on Ghost Whisperer, Killer Instinct and Night Stalker.

IMO, the end of the season finale of Lost last season was one of the best 10 minutes of television I've seen in a long time. While keeping the thread as spoiler-free as possible, what are some of your highlights & lowlights of the new season?

I've already given up on Bones as miserably unrealistic and poorly written.

If we're also talking comedies, I'm definitely watching My Name Is Earl next week.

Curses on the evil TV-Military-Industrial complex, for creating GOOD programs for a change, and eating up our spare time! WIll those fiends stop at nothing?

I actually found Supernatural more entertaining than I expected, and yes, last night's recap/first ep of Lost had me glued, even with the live-action "will the plane with broken nose-gear crash and burn?" scenario competing with it on CNN.

I have to agree with Max Torque on both counts. I believe I've watched my first and only episode of Bones; even as a marginal (very marginal) Buffy/Angel fan, I don't find much to like about Boreanz as an actor. IMO, both of those shows would have been better with different leads.

Regarding "My Name Is Earl," I had this suspicion that it might be smarter than the previews indicated (a-la Arrested Development, Malcom, etc.), and it's looking like that might really be the case. Comedies are *so* error prone, but they've at least got me for one more week on that one...

I planned on watching "Lost" and "House" this season, but I think I'll just stick with "Lost". "House" seems like it's going to be the same thing over and over again, with every episode following this basic formula:

Doctor: Well, we all agree. The patient has Disease X.
House: I sarcastically disagree. The patient actually had a rare form of Disease Y. I want to try a radical procedure.
Doctor: You're a loose cannon, House! I forbid you to try that procedure.
House: If I don't, the patient will die.
Doctor: House, I disapprove of your methods, but damn it, I respect your talent.
House: I'll sarcastically accept that compliment. Now get out of my way. I've got a patient to save and a valuable life lesson to learn.

Let's face it, if Hugh Laurie weren't in the lead role, House would be unwatchable. He MAKES that show.

I read an artical about "The Cell", a proposed comedy series about some 'bungling' Alqida terrorists who get involved in the Chicago culture. The producer didn't seem to understand why it couldn't get a pass.

The writer compared it to "Hogan's Heros" but pointed out that HH aired twenty years after the war and that Kilnk and Shultz were just German solders, not Nazis. (this was pretty clear in the series. Klink's "heil Hitlers" seem rather forced and "kiss-up" while Shultz was played as a family man doing a job. Both, we are told, were veterans of the Imperial German army in WWI)

It's not so much that the shows are bad so far. Just...well, boring I guess would sum it up. Of all the ghost/alien shows that have come out so far, Threshold is the only one that might keep me coming back.

Supernatural is the rough equivalent of a Scooby-Doo episode, just without the talking dog (so far) & the snack craving herbal-American.

Invasion has about the least subtle storyline ever (they may as well take all of the thinking out of the show & have the charaters wear shirts that say "Bad Guy" & "Good Guy").

Ghost Whisperer looks like a big pile, so I'm just going to avoid that one altogether.

Just heard that HEAD CASES has been cancelled after two episodes. I've not seen the show, just the commercials (had me yawning "uuugghh"), so just checked out some reviews to get some detail on this disaster-- yow! Still doesn't sound as bad as THE WAR AT HOME, though.

Having actually watched both episodes of HEAD CASES (oh the shame), thanks to the magic of VCR's, I can attest that it wasn't horrendously bad, just aggressively mediocre. It might have survived on a low-expectations night, such as Saturday or sunday, but in the 8 p.m. Wednesday suicide slot, it was dead meat before it even aired.

Invasion lost me when they managed to fit three of my least favorite cliche's in a ten minute stretch (two within seconds of each other).

1. Stupid kid does something inanely risky for the most trivial of reasons: girl wanders into woods during hurricane because she couldn't find the cat in the house. Every cat owner (and even many who aren't) knows you will not be seeing a cat during a storm, even if it is in the house. And a guy who lives in the middle of a swamp and has kids who think it's okay to wander out there alone is best left out of the gene pool.

2. Suddenly accelerating car: The guy is driving down a dirt road in a storm. It looks like he's going 20, which seems a little fast even then. However, a flying mailbox cracks his windshield and the car skids out of control over fifty feet before rolling over three times. Did he have to ask for special super-bald teflon coated tires at the local Sears?

3. Massive destruction rains down on the main cast, but nobody is even scratched: Lets see, a flipped SUV, exploding windows, collapsing roofs, and nobody even needs medical attention?

I also gave it abig thumbs down when I realised they were going with the "aliens that take over you body/can transform to look just like you" route. Sure, it saves on budget, but it just doesn't make any sense. The only thing it ever had going for it was the shock value, and that went the way of the Dodo a long time ago.
