The governor of Georgia has asked all the state's public schools to close Monday and Tuesday to save fuel.

The Associated Press story is pretty bare-bones, but a Google News search may turn up more details in an hour or two.

Rita was the Ultimate Warrior of hurricanes.

Lots of energy making its way to land but as soon as it got there it blew up.

Tragic I won't be able to hear any more of Anderson Cooper's beat poetry.

I'd like to think of it as the Blair Witch of hurricanes. The hype was much, much greater than the actual event.

No wind damage, just some branches down, we only lost power for a few hours. The talking heads on the TV made it sound like it was going to be the end of the world. My cable is out, so I haven't been able to see what antics they are pulling now that Houston dodged the bullet. Probably trying to blame Bush somehow.

DONNA, by W.R. "Plum Bob" Wilson:
Donna was a husky lass,
A lusty dame was she,
She kicked her heels and swirled her skirts,
And shrieked with fiendish glee.
She ripped at all our buildings,
Uprooted trees galore.
She took the Gulf Of Mexico,
And flung it on the shore.
She blew her breath from North and East,
And then gave us the eye.
And when she found we still were here,
She made another try.
From South and West she did her best,
A thorough job to make.
She passed with great reluctance,
Leaveing havok in her wake.

Think anyone will write about Katrina or Rita?

Katrina, probably; but Rita? I'm inclined to doubt it. It would be like a song titled The Edmund Fitzgerald [/i]Arrives Safely To Dock[/i].

(to the tune of Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald)....

The newspapers told
of the end of the world,
Number five on th' intensity meter....

And now, they confess,
Just a big soggy mess,
'Twas the remnants of Hurr-i-cane Rita....

Remiinds me of "Gorgo" on MST3K when they sang as the ship pulled into port.

To continue:
"They claimed bodys galore,
Ten thousand or more,
Worse than it was in Or-lins,

"But as the sun came out,
Kids would play and shout,
Press said 'This was bore-in'!"

Rita was still a bit nasty but still a stiff breeze as compared to Katrina.

Keep in mind we still have 2 months left in hurricane season, 2 months!

Let's hope and pray Mother Nature just freakin lays off for the remainder of it.

Please MN, be a dear don't beat us into submission. Thanks. :)

Hear hear, Smitty. I've got serious hurricane fatigue. One worse-than-Camille storm is enough, thank you very much.

The reporters in the room,
They predicted our doom,
Saying this would be Ka-tri-na's equal,

'Cause none of them knew,
the old Hollywood rule,
that you don't expect too much from sequels.

(Someone please stop me!)

Katrina is much more songworthy, I think:

The Washington Post, George Bush they did roast
While NPR lauded the looters

Gulf Port they ignored—red states are a bore
Just cajuns, casinos and Hooters

Anybody else?

A minor tragedy of Rita lost in the shuffle:

These poll numbers we will heed!
A choice photo-op we need!
With his back to the storm,
Their hearts will surely warm!
Folks will stop their complainin',
For a smile 'midst that rainin'!
But, ol' Rita in Texas,
She's decided to vex us.
There's a big hitch in our plans,
(said with a wringing of hands)
The trip had to change,
The weather's quite strange.
No, no, this won't do!
But this is all true:
A schedule had to be changed
And a whole day rearranged,
(I guess, it's kinda funny)
All 'cause it was too sunny.

BM: I should have mentioned this at the beginning. I solve my problems with violence.

Well, yeah, but Rita was the third most intense hurricane NOAA had on record at one point.

The truth is, that 72 hours before landfall, it might have been hit the shore with more energy than Katrina. Or maybe not. Nobody knew, or could know, so I'm inclined to sympathize with the media there.

On the other hand, despite reports, there were a total of six deaths inside the Superdome; four from natural causes, one overdose, and one apparent suicide. For that, people need to be fired.

Following Pip's lead....

Reporters don't dare,
politicians don't care
to admit we can't fight this type creature...

You can argue all the time,
There's no reason or rhyme,
When it comes to that b$%#@ "Mother Nature"
