Given my family name, we very carefully chose the middle names of our children to work both as first and last names. That way if they end up in a class full of kids with the same first name, they can go by their middle name(*). If they decide to go into acting or any other field where a pronouncable last name is needed, the middle name will again suffice.

And yes, it was a complete coincidence that both of them ended up with middle names that were names of characters from Babylon 5. We do ocassionally get teased about it, though.

* A genuine problem with My wife's best friend choosing the names "Emily" and "Jason" and having to deal with classes containing at least three of each.

I did once suggest Kurt name his daughter Jabootina.

But he had publicly asked for suggestions.

PEGGY: I don't see how having a girl on the team would ruin it. Did a woman judge ruin the Supreme Court?
HANK: Yes, and that woman's name was Earl Warren.

Which shows what happens when one publicly asks for suggestions.

You have to be careful with initials as well; my dad wanted to name my sister Valerie Denise, but my mom rejected that notion for obvious reasons. The fact that our family name is Stakely didn't really help.

It's really not that big a problem; I've been in classes before with anywhere from two to three other Michaels. The usual method is to resort to last name rather than first.

BM: I should have mentioned this at the beginning. I solve my problems with violence.

The same thing happened to my sister when she named her boys Dylan and Brandon. She could have at least gone for Zandor or Angelo.

My first and middle names -- John William -- are Anglicized versions of my grandfathers'first names, Giovanni and Willi. My father never cared for his own first name, Vittorio, because he grew up Germany and at the time it stood out, which I suspect is why they localized mine.

Depsite the fact that I'm really only 1/4 german, my mother wanted a name that matched and tried to name me "Wolfgang Amadeus vonRoeschlaub". Nobody could talk her out of it. Thankfully, I was a difficult birth and by the time she awoke my father had already picked a name.

I remember reading, in the Reader's Digest I think, an anecdote about a woman who wanted to find an interesting name for her first child. Shortly before the baby was born, she decided she was going to name him Emerson. Then her best friend told her, "Remember, you'll have to call out that name when getting him to come home from playing with his friends."

She named him Jeff.

Good thing Nicholas Cage isn't a huge fan of The Mighty Thor or else that poor kid might have been named Fin Fang Foom Cage.

My name, as I've mentioned before, is Miranda, and in nursery school, at Summer camp, and at Syracuse University, there were girls named Amanda and people sometimes confused the two of us.

A few of my "odd name" experiences:
-I went to highschool with a guy named Matthew Mattias Matt. Or, as he was known, Matt Matt or Matt cubed. Cool guy.

-One of my roomates had the last name of 'Pyle'. He married a lovely girl with the last name of 'Weed'. And so, as I love to point out, Mrs. Weed-Pyle.

-Finally, I was blessed with a rather easy and common first name (Joe). However, it's a bit too common. When I first arrived here in Madang PNG, there were six guys with our orgization in this town. Three, including myself, had the name of Joseph. Kind of reminded me of that one Monty Python routine (we'll just call you Joe, it will save on a lot of confusion).

Hmm, I used to work with a Johny John Johnson. I wonder if they were related.

My wife went to school with a "Randy John Thomas". He used to always follow up introducing himself with "and yes, I am." At least he had a sense of humor about it.

A guy I used to work with once mentioned he had dated a woman named Candy Barr. I asked if she was tasty. He said, "Shut up, Brad!"

I'm sure we all have name stories. I once knew a women named Rebecca Decker. She was dating a guy named Andrew Becker at one point.

A friend of my mom from her hippy days in Virginia named her daughter Sunny Day Anderson. Another was Cinnamon Grahm Brown.
I'm just glad I got out of there with only an oddball middle name.

Well, at least it can be shortened to 'Kal', which isn't that bad.

I hate to inform Mr. Cage, but he is late to the party - a few months ago at my workplace I met a very nice black couple who proudly introduced me to their son Jor-El. When I blurted out, "You mean, like Superman's dad?", they confirmed that yes, indeed, that was who they named him for.

Amazingly, the kid thought his name was cool.
