I can't believe I forgot to mention this earlier, but there are far worse names for a boy than Kal-El. After all, at least Cage isn't a major Johnny Cash fan or the kid could have been saddled with Sue for the rest of his life. Name change or not, there's no way to get away from a moniker like that.
BM: I should have mentioned this at the beginning. I solve my problems with violence. |

Peter Griffin pretty much voices my sentiments here: "Krypton sucks."

Plus you totally know he's going to run into a schoolyard bully named Rex Luthor or Jim Zod or something.

There was a time when "Sue" was an uncommon, but acceptable name for a boy. "Sue Hicks" was an inspector of mines in Tennesee and was involved in getting the "Monkey Trial" a hearing. Let's not forget Marion Mikeal Morrison, AKA John Wayne.

| More disturbing than the idiotic name that Cage has given his son is the fact that his new wife was barely out of high school when he seduced her. When you're trolling the local high schools for dates, I think that giving your children goofy names is the least of your problems. |

| My name is Miranda and the ten millionth time I heard "Miranda, like the Mirnads warnings?" I just had hysterics. My fatheræ"ì, was named Mark Smith, and he told me "Do you know how many people have said to me, 'oh, you're Mark Smith. How's your brother, Trade?'" |

My last name is Czaplinski.
On the list of potential baby names for my children (which, alas, don't look like they'll be used for a variety of reasons), the weirdest name was Xavier, which really isn't all that weird, being that it is the name of both a Catholic Saint and the head of a school for mutants.
Having suffered for having a last name that is easily corrupted into all sorts of hurtful variations, even when people just don't know how to pronounce it, I would never give my kid a 'unique' or 'distinctive' name. Children are NOT extensions of the parents pretentions or vehicals for artistic or fashion statements, or should not be any more than they are by mere association during their formative years.
Though I fully support the right of parents to name their kids any damn thing they want, I would also support a law that would allow Bobbing Truck Hitch Moonchild Mabootu-Rabinowitz to sue his parents for mental cruelty upon reaching majority.

MikeC, my own opinion is that calling your child "Kal-El" or such should be an automatic reason for CPS intervention.
Of course it's not just celebrities who subject their offspring to this sort of nonsense. In my parent's youth, they knew a family with the last name of "Dollar". They named their two daughters "Silver" and "Golden". |

My name is a bit weird because it's actually pretty common -- but nobody knows it.
I've been asked if I were a stuntman, there was another "John Nowak" in Peekskill who ran a Bible class (Three years of wrong numbers and, "No, he's the next one down in the phone book ..." They were usually very nice people, though) and another one in college who had stolen a library book. Good thing the student IDs had student numbers on them and I could prove (for two years) that it wasn't me.
---------- We've always been united in stupidity. That's why there is no hope. But, then again, when has that ever stopped us?

You said it. If I had a buck for every kid I've met or heard of where the parents think he/she's basically an oversized hyper-accurate doll to play with, well, I'd be sitting on a beach in Hawaii sipping something really expensive.

| Well, at least he didn't name the kid Mr. Mxyzptlk or Darkseid or Bizarro or something even worse. Cold comfort, I know. |

My stance is that middle names are for the oddball choices and interesting but non-mainstream family names. The first name should be a mainstream choice, or one that can be shortened to a mainstream name.
If I ever adopted, I would never saddle a child with such a burdensome name.

That's exactly what Joan CHANDOS Baez's parents and Elizabeth ROSEMOND Taylor's parents did. The fact that both women chose to get rich and famous using their common first names shows what they thought of their fancy, unusual middle names. |
