PEGGY: I don't see how having a girl on the team would ruin it. Did a woman judge ruin the Supreme Court?
HANK: Yes, and that woman's name was Earl Warren.

A version of "...Journey to the Center of the Earth starring Kathy Ireland and Emo Philips (really) and directed by Albert Pyun..."?

C'mon, Ken, admit you made that one up. No one, not even under the aegis of Jabootu, could come up with an idea THAT wrong-headed! Emo PHILLIPS??!?!

What, she didn't cover the whole "going deep underground and finding a new world" thing with Alien From LA? Perhaps there were some rich nuances she and Pyun felt they needed to more fully explore.

Hey, IIRC the episode with Ponch was the only time I ever saw Aztec mythology used correctly in a horror film.

Never figured that one out.

Hey, what about Robot vs. the Aztec Mummy!

Edit: 13 x 20 = 260

I'm so glad you brought it up!

So far, I've seen three films aside from Kolchak which had Aztec Mummy themes: involving the Wrestling Women, Santo, and the Robot vs. the Aztec Mummy. Although all three Aztec Mummies were purportedly different characters, their backstories were identical -- worse, they were almost identical to that of Boris Karlof's Imhotep. In each case, an Aztec fell in love with a girl intended for sacrifice, helped her escape, they were captured, and he was buried alive and cursed to guard her. Oh, and jewelry with a map to the Aztec Treasure is invariably involved, to provide a McGuffin.

Okay, fine -- but why this obsession with a Universal film made before WWII?

I happen to have a list of Aztec religious festivals. These took place at the end of every 20-day month, so there are 18 a year; 19 if you could the fasting on the extra five inauspicious "Empty Days."

Of those 18, at least nine involved human sacrifices.

Now, ignoring the usual caveat about how impossible it is to know for sure how much of this is correct, the historical consensus is that it was, and there's certainly been enough skeletons found to comfirm most of it. There's yards of horror material in Aztec mythology.

And Kolchak was, as far as I know, the only one that actually used it.

John, some people might consider it, well, peculiar that you have a list of Aztec holidays requiring human sacrifice.

For myself, I consider it one mark of the perfect man.

I don't think many people would consider it peculiar, unless of course he started observing them.

Just Tlacaxipehualiztli in honor of Xipe-Totec, but hey, who hasn't?

Oh, man -- I completely spaced about that one.

I've got it on Netflix now, and bumped it to the top of my queue, but I haven't seen it yet. There's only two things that strike me right off:

Quetzalcoatl is the "Feathered Serpent," so I'm not sure if the monster design is right.

Quetzalcoatl was a great teacher and, oddly, was one of the few Aztec deities who abhorred human sacrifice. So relating a man-eating monster to Quetzalcoatl is a cosmic misfire, akin to the "conquering armies of Anubis" from Mummy Returns. Anubis was not a major god: he was Guardian of the Dead (not even Lord of the Dead -- that was Osiris), and thus quite prominent in museums because most surviving Egyptian artifacts are from graves.

Damn, I can't believe that I of all people missed this -- Quetzalcoatl was used as an alien who had visited Earth on one episode of the animated Star Trek. IIRC, that was another Aztec mythology TV show that did it right.

I've heard of that one for years, but I've never had a chance to see it. It's in my queue. Netflix is a godsend.
