Mentioned on another board my theory about why they'd use the Kolchak name in a new series that is nothing like the original, but since the subject was brought up in Ken's Blog, thought I'd mention it here too:
I'm assuming that the idea was to make an X-Files type (or "Rip-off", if you prefer)all along, and to be aiming for the same audience. So how does one present this show, and supposedly not chase them off because it's a "rip-off"? I think since it's probably well known amoung X-files fans that the show was "inspired" by Kolchak, the "brains" behind this new show figured if they said the show is THE NIGHT STALKER, and the idea predates X-Files, it will be accepted as something other than an X-Files clone.
By the way, just got the KOLCHAK:THE NIGHT STALKER DVD set today, and watched the first episode (The Ripper) -- plenty of laughs and scares --- something completely missing from the "new" show (especially the laughs -- I guess Grim is In for modern "horror")

Yeah, that sort of thing happens a lot -- I'll bet that "Starship Troopers" was sold as a "Colonial Marines" film.

Actually it sort of depends on how you look at it. I read an interview with Frank Spotnitz, who is writing the show. Basically, ABC came to him and said "We are doing a remake of the Night Stalker, do you want to write it?". Spotnitz came up with the direction of the show himself.
So did the network want an X Files clone? On one hand, they didn't ask for that, and it was Spotnitz's idea. So that would indicate no. On the other hand, Spotnitz DID write for the X Files for 8 years, so if they did want a series that resembled the X Files, he would be the logical choice. |

Hmm -- I dunno. If the conversation had gone
Network: We want to do an X-Files clone. Spotnitz: How about reviving Kolchak?
I suspect we wouldn't hear about it.
