Just when I thought movies couldn't get any worse. This one makes Son of the Mask look like Masterpiece Theater!
Wow. Just... wow. Alone in the Dark has new company. Someone out-Bolled Uwe-Boll.
I suggest a Jabootu review go next weekend and do a review. :)

Thanks, Jonah, but I think Jabootu has already been warned. I mean, it stars The Rock, and while he's been OK in several movies (he's a riot in "Be Cool", for instance), I still have to see him in a good movie.

Is it worse than the novel, even? It is full of ridiculous and pointless references, like say, a guy going up to a weapon locker and punching in "idkfa" for the access code?
I'd volunteer to take a stab at it, but I'd have to wait for the home video release. I'm not very good at taking coherent notes in a dark theater. In fact, judging from my college experience, I'm not good at all at taking notes in a timely manner. |

I haven't seen Mortal Kombat, though what I've read tells me it's a guilty pleasure. And Tomb Raider was at least watchable, mostly because of Angelina Jolie. But with those exceptions, can anyone name a videogame-based movie that was actually GOOD?
The sad thing is, there've been a couple of games out there that could translate well, if done right. |

I couldn't suppress an "Oh, brother!" during the trailer when you get a POV shot of someone (probably the Rock) wielding a chainsaw. Something tells me the movie is going to have a lot of gamer-pleasing POV shots.

I've heard a few reports that it will indeed be POV heavy. I swear, I swear. |

The best special effect I've seen in DOOM so far is how they were able to cover the Rocks extensive traditinal Polynesian tatoos.
Not a good sign.

No surprise that SciFi's having another of their filmmaking pseudo-documentaries featuring Doom. In the spots I've seen, besides the chainsaw moment, there's also one with a demon getting shot at with an assault rifle, and (the real "oh, come on!" moment for me) one where a flat computer voice intones "reload" while a fresh clip gets slapped into the rifle.
Honestly, a frenetic action movie done with a good amount of first-person POV could be interesting. But in the case of Doom, you might as well just buy the game. I heard the third one's pretty darned good, actually. |

The first Resident Evil might also qualify as a guilty pleasure. It seemed to be just transitions between Shock Reveals (the lab tech missing half his face, eg). But no, it's not a good movie in any sense.
However, the sequel was so bad I could barely remember seeing it...a couple of hours after I left the theatre. |

I've noticed the POV shots, too - in one commercial, there's a quick clip of what looks like a POV shot of someone firing a BFG. I think my eyes rolled far enough back in my head for me to stare at my brain stem. Just because it's a first-person video game doesn't mean you absolutely have to make a first-person movie.
At that point, what exactly is the point of going to see the movie? Why not just, you know, play the game?

Well, there's always the possibility they could have been a semi-cool addition. I mean, no reason to jump down the throats of filmmakers for trying something new and potentially interesting.
Of course, it did suck. The PoV shots were used for about 5 minutes top, after someone became "superhuman". It mostly ended up being like one of those amusement park rides which is a theater with seats that tilt. Except without the tilting seats. Which kind of defeats the point. |

Well, one of the trends in video games is that games are becoming more centered around a story, so after sitting through 20 or so cut scenes, you might find a movie more interactive.

I agree - I don't have a problem with the POV shots themselves. Had it been a competent movie they could have been interesting.
Since the movie was this movie, I felt safe in trashing them. :) (note that I'm not saying a Doom movie will absolutely always suck - the games were great, and there's potential there for a fun flick. Just not in this one.)

The thing that kills me is, Dwayne Johnson (I still can't bring myself to call him "The Rock") deserves to be a big star. He's got tons of charisma and presence, appears to have a fair amount of acting ability (though it's hard to tell with the movies he's been in) and, from seeing him interviewed and hearing him speak at San Diego this year, seems like a hell of a nice guy.
Yet Hollywood keeps slapping him in these awful, generic SF movies. I mean, his best movie is "The Rundown"...how sad is that? Even "Be Cool", which at least made good use of him, was pretty lousy. At least the upcoming "Southland Tales" should provide a break from the usual junk he's in, even if it ends up being an entirely new type of junk.
The guy's just waiting for his "Terminator" or "Rocky". Someone give it to him!

Two words: Spy Hunter. Two more words: John Woo.
If that doesn't make him a star, nothing will.

Now they need to make a movie where soldiers in Iraq actually find one of Saddam Hussein's secret underground chemical weapons facilities only to find it overrrun with big mutant sand spiders. And the the film will be called IRAQNID!
