Here in Dixie, I have also heard the phrase "cold drink" used, usually from older people. That's a little odd, actually, since the favorite (literal) cold drink around here is iced tea, sweetened. (Maybe because cola drinks are sort of similar to sweet ice tea?) Food -- or drink -- for thought, anyway.
Reality is a crutch for people who can't face up to science fiction. |

Growing up in Minnesota and now living in Tennessee, I've wondered why people here can't seem to get it through their heads that Coke is a particular brand of cola, which is a type of...well, I call it "pop," but "soda" works too. Just so long as you're not calling a Mountain Dew a "coke."

I've always used coke; although I try to make it a point to say cola when I order in a restaurant so as to speed the process along a bit.
Actually, in our family, coke is acceptable for any soft drink that's anything darker than transparent.
Now as far as the Coke vs Pepsi arguments go, everyone knows RC beats them both...

...the heck? R.C. Cola is even worse than Pepsi! (Still, though, the "worst ever soft drink" award has to go to the entire Shasta lineup. Ggghhhh.)

Only soda.
Having grown up in New York City, I agree. I pity anyone else. My wife is from Tennessee and she insits on "a coke". I pity her, too...

A little off topic, but has anyone here heard about putting ammonia in their coke?

No. My mom told me yesterday, about when she was a girl, that my grandma would get a fountain coke from the pharmacy and have them put a dab of ammonia in it. She said grandma did it to calm her nerves and apparently so did other people.

Dang it, that made me snort laugh. Ouch.
Back on topic, for about 99.99999% of the people in Kansas, it seems to be "pop."
Then there's my Cousin Eddie (everyone has one of these, right?), who calls it a "sudsy."
I dare not ask why. Who knows what answer I'll get.
I came, I saw, I was really too tired to deal with it so I just went to bed. |

That's one of those things that sounds just goofy enough to be true...

| I've always split the difference and called it "soda pop". Kind of a CYA thing. |

It doesn't seem to matter what I call it in a resturant. If I tell the waitress that I want a Coke, inevitably she'll say "Is Pepsi alright?" & vice versa. Same thing with Sprite/7-Up.
