It looks like Saw II has taken the top spot at the box office this weekend, and some of the critics over at Rotten Tomatoes even liked it better than the first one.
What do other minions think about this budding franchise? I am a big booster of the first film because even though I'm a big thriller/mystery fan who knows all the tricks of the genre, I was still totally faked out by the ending of Saw.
I saw Saw II this weekend and while I wasn't quite as blown away by the denoument, I have to admit that the mystery aspect was still top notch. Marketing seems to demand that these films are sold as gruesome horror fare, but I still think that they work best as devious/clever murder mysteries. |

I rented it a few weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised (perhaps from having heard mixed things, which makes you wonder why I blew money on it in the first place). I thought it was a pretty twisted little puppy and though it had little content beyond the gross-out factor, I was (sadly, perhaps?) rather entertained.
The commentary track in which the writer/actor and director are constantly joking and taking the piss out of themselves and their fellow thesps, is so utterly at odds with the somber images on the screen that it's hilarious. They certainly don't take themselves seriously...

I think that Saw suffered from too-much 'MTV' style direction; that is over-reliance on speeded up sequences, quick cut editing, etc. I thought that the premise was strong enough itself to generate the required suspense; it was as if the film makers didn't trust the script enough.

| I liked Saw for the most part... up until the ending. The movie had a creepy and workable premise and was quite well executed, if a little too contrived but I was willing to cut it some slack until the last 15 minutes or so. I don't think I've ever seen a movie take such a sharp turn to the imbecilic. The final twist has to be one the stupidest, worst thought out, most pointless and desperate I've ever come across. I don't think I've ever seen a movie ruined as much by a bad ending. |

I enjoyed the first one inmensely, but at the same time I was wondering how seriously its makers were taking the whole thing. I mean, it starts seriously enough, but the scenes where we cut away from the two prisoners have comedy all written all over them, specially the cops' incursion into the villain's lair, and the ending as well.
I'm still wondering if the makers of the first Saw where really trying to do the next Silence of the lambsand it misfired somehow or if they are masters on playing sick jokes on the audience. I guess the sequel will make things clarer for me.
And I agree, the MTV filmmaking didn't help to take certain scenes seriously. |
