Just got a "this page cannot be found" message when I tried that link. What did the article say?

The last thing I heard was that the show was out of production till Jason Bateman recovered from his throat surgery, and was supposed to resume.

RIP: '7th Heaven,' 'Arrested'

By Nellie Andreeva
The Camdens will bid farewell to viewers in May when the WB Network's drama "7th Heaven" will end its run after 10 seasons. The Bluth clan of Fox's "Arrested Development" is also headed for the exit after Fox has cut back the third-season order on the Emmy-winning comedy to 13 episodes.

Also getting the ax at Fox is "Arrested's" companion on Monday, the freshman comedy "Kitchen Confidential," whose order will not be extended beyond the initial 13 episodes.

Meanwhile, another first-year sitcom, ABC's "Freddie," has received a back-nine episode order for a full-season 22.

"7th Heaven," whose debut on August 26, 1996, marked the first-ever Monday broadcast of the then-fledging WB Network, will bow out as the longest-running family drama on television.

After 10 seasons, the show, from creator Brenda Hampton and Spelling Television, is still a top draw for WB, averaging 5.1 million viewers this season to date.

Creatively, the show also will go out in style, Hampton said.

"I think this is the best season we've ever had, and we're planning a very exciting and heartwarming conclusion to the series," she said. "On the show, we talk about choosing your feelings, and we chose to feel happy and blessed to have been on the air for so long."

There is talk about a potential "7th Heaven" spinoff, but Hampton admits that would be hard to do.

"('7th Heaven') is a family show," she said. "I think the success of the show is that the family is intact with the mom, the dad and the children, so it is a very difficult show to spin off."

Sources indicated that the reasons to take "7th Heaven" off the air were primarily financial. As series age, they get more and more expensive, with the price tag especially high for a show with a large cast like "7th Heaven." The cancellation of the long-running series also comes during a process of extensive cost-cutting across all Warner Bros. divisions.

As for the demise of "Arrested," it comes just as the acclaimed comedy came back this week after a hiatus to make room for Fox's baseball coverage. The two back-to-back episodes of the Imagine TV/20th Century Fox TV show averaged a paltry 4 million viewers Monday, sending Fox to fifth place in the 8 p.m. hour and putting a dent on the ratings of its lead-out, "Prison Break."

There is a possibility that the show will be shopped around, but its high cost is expected to be prohibitive for a cable network.

Fox said Thursday that it will pull "Arrested" and 20th TV/New Line TV's "Kitchen" off the schedule for the remaining three Mondays of the November sweep, replacing them with a rerun of the previous episode of "Prison Break" leading into an original episode of the serialized drama.

"Arrested" and "Kitchen" are set to return to their time slots with original episodes Dec. 5, following the fall finale of "Prison Break" on Nov. 28.

The Warner Bros. TV-produced "Freddie," which stars Freddie Prinze Jr., has consistently built on its "George Lopez" lead-in, most recently averaging 8.4 million viewers and a a 3.5 rating/ 9 share among adults 18-49.

And this from Variety:

"It's not looking good for "Arrested Development" or frosh laffer "Kitchen Confidential."

Fox has cut back its episode order on the critically-admired "Arrested" to just 13 segs, down from 22. Producers of "Kitchen," meanwhile, have been told the show won't be getting a full-season pickup.

More worrisome: Fox is pulling both shows from the schedule, effective immediately. "Arrested" returned from a month-long hiatus this week, while "Kitchen""Kitchen" was slated to return Monday.

Instead of the two laffers, Fox will air repeats of drama "Prison Break" in the 8-9 p.m. Monday slot for the rest of the November sweeps. It's presumed "Arrested" and "Kitchen" will return to finish out the remainder of their runs in December. Come January, net has long planned to move "House" into the Monday slot.

Fox wasn't commenting Thursday morning, and for now, nobody's using the word "cancellation." But in the case of "Arrested," the handwriting appears to be on the wall."

On another message board, the guy who posted the story about "Arrested Development" sarcastically remarked that a decline in viewership is inevitable when you yank the show off the air for a month and screw with its time slot. From what I've read, wasn't it getting decent ratings, at least? Sometimes it feels like networks simply resent certain shows and are determined to find an excuse to drop them, while cramming some other pet show down the viewers' throats. Is this what's going on with "Arrested" and "Prison Break?" It sure sounds like it.

GalahadPC, I agree with you here - there have been a number of shows (mostly ones I've liked, alas) that get axed while their weaker siblings are left clinging precariously to life. My belief is that much of this reflects network politics and infighting; presumably, the "mentor" of "Arrested Development" is in political decline, and unable to protect his/her show.

I really got to jump in here, because Fox has really gone above and beyond in trying to find an audience for AD, at the cost of millions of dollars.

The ratings this year were down 30% or so from last year's, and even then the numbers were markedly anemic, especially for a show in the cushy post-Simpsons slot. Even with that advantage, AD has never gotten anywhere near 'decent' ratings.

Fox kept the show on for two and a half years when they easily would have been justified in canning it after a month or two. I can't think of a show, ever, that got better support than this one. Maybe Homicide: Life on the Street, but even that is debateable.

The fact is, AD was just never going to find a large audience. I loved this show as much as anybody, but that's just the fact of the situation. I predict that in another ten years they will have people subscribe to deeply loved but generally unpopular shows like this to keep them going. Sadly, that mechanism is not yet in place.

PEGGY: I don't see how having a girl on the team would ruin it. Did a woman judge ruin the Supreme Court?
HANK: Yes, and that woman's name was Earl Warren.

iTunes has started allowing you download episodes of certain TV series for $2 a pop. Maybe the future isn't too far off. Right now it's just a few, current ABC shows. But, I heard the CBS and NBC inked a deal for $.99 per episode.

The ROPe gives you three options, convert, submit, or die. There is a fourth, resist.

Could someone please try and explain what was supposed to be entertaining about AD? I watched a few episodes because I've heard it was good (and my brothers loved it) and I thought it was horrible. The only moment I liked was when the main character gets fed up with his father and burns the little food booth and then finds out what his father meant when he said 'All his money was in it'!

Otherwise, I thought the show was horrible, and I felt that Fox only renewed it after the howling of fans because they saw dollar signs for season sets, like Chappelle's show and Family Guy.

I thought the show was a train wreck of a production, something better suited to five minute vignettes and not a full episodic series.

What's funny, though, is that I always felt like I was in the minority, because I hear so many other people raving about it at work, home, etc,....but if its gotten canned twice I must not be.

So again, I ask, and quite seriously too: what made the show worth watching? Maybe I just caught bad moments, and I'll peek at it again.

I hate feeling like I'm missing out on something...

Arrested Development always seemed like the sitcom for people who hate sitcoms. Not exactly an audience grabber.

I can't tell you what funny is, as that is subjective. However, I can tell you that I was almost in tears watching one of the last episodes, when, as a result of NUMEROUS misunderstandings, David Cross, dressed as a large mole, flailed about stomping on a miniature city, while doing an impression of George Sr., only to be stopped by George Micheal swooping in on a jet pack, while a group of Japanese investors looked on.

Confused? I guess you had to be there.

Hey guys.

you think your getting screwed with AD over there??? try living in australia.

the only place you can see it is on Digital Cable and they play the first season over and over.

Of course i have turned to other sources...more electronic sources for my AD fix.

That jetpack vs the mole was one of the funniest moments in television history.

AD is the Crowned King of "Random Object From Episode 2 Appearing as The Punchline in Episode 28"

Sad to see it go.
